YWAM Maui

Monthly Newsletter

Updates on my second month in missionary training, what God has been teaching me, outreach details, evangelism, and more!

Hi beloved friends and family! It is so good to get back to updating you on what my life has been like recently. It is hard to believe that June is already almost here! May consisted of embracing a busy schedule, celebrating my birthday away from home, and leaning into more of what God has for me in this season. It has been a busy month with so much to learn - so let's get into it!

Being Servant-Hearted

Throughout this season, the question of how I can become more servant-hearted has been embedded on my heart. I think about how humble our leaders at YWAM Maui were to wash our feet at the end of Love Feast after we had been barefoot in the wilderness for three days...

But I also think about Jesus. He demonstrated being servant-hearted in all that He did. From foot-washing, to healing the sick, serving the poor, and spending time with sinners, not saints, He showed us the purest form of humbleness and humility, for the sake of serving.

It's wild to think of how the holy, set apart, and sacred Son of God came to Earth, not to be served, but TO serve, and to do the jobs that nobody else wanted to do. So if Jesus could lower Himself to this position, how much lower am I called to serve? And how often do I think that scrubbing the floors or washing dishes is below me, when it wasn't below Jesus Himself.

"For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Mark 10:45

Work Blessings - Kitchen Crew!

There have been so many ways the Lord has been calling me to become more servant-hearted in this season. One way He has been teaching me is through our work blessings. Each week, we spend roughly 10 hours working in our designated work blessing area. This is so we can both serve and honor each other and our base!

Not so coincidentally, I was assigned to the kitchen crew, (even though it was the one I least wanted...). I could have seen this one coming because I knew it was an area that I was reluctant to humble myself in to serve. And don't get me wrong its not always the prettiest, prepping and cooking large-scale meals, washing 40+ dishes, and cleaning all the appliances, but it was where God could do the most in me!

I think this has been an area I've learned to become the most servant-hearted in because our jobs in kitchen can tend to look a lot different than the rest on base. But I've felt the Lord teaching me to approach it as another way to serve and spend time with Him throughout the day and learn become more like Jesus.

Community Outreach - Awana!

Community Outreach has also been a place where I have had the opportunity to serve locally on Maui. Since the beginning of my DTS in April, we have been partnering with a local church to help serve in their Awana ministry.

Awana is a worldwide nonprofit ministry focused on providing Bible-based evangelism and discipleship solutions for ages 2 to 18. I have had the privilege of serving, mentoring, and leading children on "Team Sparks," which include ages from kindergarten to second grade.

A lot of these children don't have parents that go to church or know who Jesus is, but since we invite everyone in the community - we are able to reach so many different children in the area!

One night per week we get the opportunity to teach them about Jesus, play games, eat snacks, and learn Bible stories! We also provide Bibles and unique ways they can learn to memorize scriptures and build long-term relationships so we can continue to love and serve them well!

Surf Evangelism

Another amazing way I've gotten to serve and know the community here is through evangelism!

Some of my team and I are apart of surf evangelism each week, where we get to prepare meals, take them out to the surf spots, and build relationships and minister to the surf community on Maui!

It has been so eye-opening to encounter people from all over the world who come here to surf and have never heard truth about Jesus. I am so grateful for the times we get to make connections, learn people's stories, and pray for random strangers - who become friends!

Each week we hope to plant seeds that will one day lead each person to give their lives to Jesus!

Being here at YWAM Maui, I am constantly being exposed to new experiences that expand my understanding of being servant-hearted. I've learned that it doesn't just look like missions, but it can look like making friendships, serving food, going out into a job, or becoming a steward to those around me.

While this is an area the Lord is working to increase my humility in, there is still so much I am learning to try to understand the heart God has for serving, and how He calls me to serve. Jesus sets THE example, as someone who served others knowing they would be the same ones spitting on Him in the crowd before He they crucified Him - often without acknowledgement or even a thank you for all He did.

A question my leader gave to me, that I have meditating on and want to leave you with is...

Are you willing to be a servant, even when you are treated like one?

Last Few Life Updates + Prayer requests!

Here are the last few updates of things that have been going on during my last month of training....

My team and I have each been feeling the pressures of what we want to do after this program comes to an end. We spent last week praying and asking the Lord of different areas around the world that He may want to highlight for us to go into...

With that being said I would so appreciate your prayers as I am trusting the Lord to lead me where He wants me in this season and the next and am working to be obedient and serve in whatever area He calls me to - whether that be overseas missions or a career in the seven spheres (government, education, media, arts & entertainment, religion, business, family)!

My team and I also have found out our outreach location and we will be traveling to Malaysia at the end of June to pioneer missions in this country! YWAM Maui hasn't sent a team to Malaysia in over 20 years, but it was so evident that the Lord called us here for this season.

We will be partnering with local YWAM bases, churches, and christians to serve in this predominately islamic country. If you would keep my team in your prayers as we are preparing for outreach, we ask for unity, health, guidance, protection, safety, and for the Lord to be preparing the people He wants us to minister to and build relationships with in Malaysia!

Lastly, everyone who is in Discipleship Training School (DTS) will be going on a media fast this week! This means all of our electronics, phone, tablets, computers, will be out of our hands this week as we dive into this week focusing on worldview.

From Monday- Monday, we will be spending a full seven days unplugged! Please pray for God to move as we clear out the clutter from our brains and devote more intentional time to Him this week!
