Brittonie's First Newsletter

Hi there!

Welcome to my first go at a newsletter (no more than twice a year), where I hope to have some interesting things to tell you about my teaching, projects, exhibitions, or other things relevant to my artistic endeavors. I’m new to personal newsletters, so bear with me while I try to find a balance. There's a lot of information here.

Some quick housekeeping.

You’ve ended up receiving this because you (multiple choice):

A)  Signed up for it.

B) Took one of my courses

C) Are someone who expressed interest in what I’m up to in some way.

D) By accident

If D (or any other option for that matter) and don’t want to keep getting mail from me, please find a helpful unsubscribe button at the bottom of this message.

It may have been a while since we last connected. In the digital space, I’ve been working  (at a glacial pace) on updating my website: BrittonieFletcher.com or Brittonie.com - It has some new galleries and a new info section; there's also a link at the bottom. I hope to make it much cleaner in the future and will continue to update for ease of use. I'm excited to have an online booking page to streamline brief meetings or 1:1 consultations, or tutorage and hope to expand these offerings in the future.

I’ve also now got a TikTok because I want to be down with the kids. I keep my socials dedicated to photo stuff, so it’s not a bad way to see what I have going on outside of a newsletter in a fun casual way. I promise no coffee shots unless it's being used as a developer.

Speaking of coffee, I finally have a Ko-Fi account operating as an online shopfront. At the time of writing this, I only have my alternative process kits listed, but I will be adding selected limited-edition prints and possibly classes. In addition to the ever-popular Cyanotype and Salt kits, I have extended the range to include a ChemiLumen Kit and a Kallitype Kit. I’ve given all the instruction leaflets a little facelift.

Stockists do get in touch I have SOR and Direct Purchase options.

With the 'Cost-ofLiving-Crisis' why not turn to digital panhandling? I’m looking into tiers, but I’ve just got it simple for now. I'm open to suggestions on how to make patronising me more appealing. It's a big step for me. I am an ever-struggling independent freelance artist (haha).

Please consider offering your support if you can.

My dear friend, Prof. John Beaver of Wisconsin Uni, just recently put out Photography: Physics and Art in Focus by IOP Press. It’s massive! If you’re in academia, order it for your library! John featured my cyanotype project, which was made for Annette Goaz’s Cyanotype Toning with Botanicals Book (also psyched to be included in this), and some other work, including calotypes, chemigrams, albumen, and maybe an anthotype. It's a refreshing look at photography with both technical and creative approaches and a background in science. It's super cool that he wanted to include me in the chapter Four Photographers and a Musician, which also has the work of my former Eco Darkroom student, Erin Woodbrey. She makes rad work which I recommend.

I’m pleased that The Height of Arrows, 2020 (below) has been selected for the Royal Scottish Academy RSA 197th Open.

This will be exhibited between the 6th of May and the 11th of June 2023, and you can view it online here.

Edinburgh LoFi (beloved community interests group) recently had “Circle” exhibition up at Edinburgh Central’s Art and Design Library in March. I have been slow on the hibernation front and put two old, very constructivist prints in and a poetic artist statement. Roddy Shippin included some particularly remarkable and psychedelic emulsion transfers of citric acid crystallography.

It’s worth checking out the online catalog *Here*.

CLASSES: As you may know, I live for teaching (and travelling and learning), so I’m happy to keep people updated on my course offerings. I’ll link things where possible, but I also have linktr.ee/Brittonie, which I hope to keep clean and comprehensive. I've included a subscription option for those of you who are interested in keeping up with what I'm offering, but it is only on the mainline; alternatively, I'll keep my info section very well updated.

I am returning to offering In-Person and Online courses and workshops through my long-neglected Eventbrite. Again, all links will be listed on my website, linktr.ee if you wish to peruse. I have some pinhole and developer workshops, some classes in salt and cyanotype, and other fun and exciting things to get your geek on.

I will absolutely be teaching some beach and canal-based ECO Darkroom-inspired workshops in Edinburgh this summer (beginning on the Solstice and carrying on through July) via Eventbrite.

I'll be at the Meadows Festival in Edinburgh the weekend of June 3rd and 4th, offering a range of taster activities such as cyanotype, salt printing, and chemilumens. I'm also unloading some equipment and will be offering discounts on my alt-process kits day of. I think the Meadows Fest is a lot of fun with so much to offer; if you're free and in the city, pop by to say hello while enjoying stalls of Bric-a-brac, food trucks galore, carnival rides and free music.

I have programmed some outdoor darkroom classes in Boston this summer and possibly in Autumn. Some of the dates are being finalised just now, so please keep an eye out.

I aim to keep them affordable while not resorting to undercutting fair teaching rates.

I am always happy to partner with groups and organizations and can accommodate diverse or a-typical class locations. Last year I got to teach Anthotype and Lumen at Cample Line, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland (Below), Cyanotypes and toning at Agitate, Edinburgh, Scotland (Above), Cyanotypes, toning, and Salt printing on the beach with Deveron Projects, Aberdeenshire, Scotland (pictured above).

Agitate also kindly invited me to display my 'Silk' project in their window last summer as some of their earliest programming for their new space.

The Silk was a parameter-based project with thoughts on the performance of making and travelling. Site-specific material-conscious, the piece was worked on the duration of a trip through Jordan exposed on a hike through Dana Biosphere via siks and hanging gardens with found naturally windfallen plants, processed with local water with a 'leave-no-trace' impact, displayed and arranged through Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea.

I am still pondering this work as it is a departure for me from tiny works with ease of storage. I am looking to combine more of my sculpture, installation and performance interests into my work. I have limited documentation of the Agitate Exhibition and am still filtering through images from Jordan, but a small selection is on my website. The above is a screengrab photo shared by dear friend and talented photographer Francis Scot,t who's work you should also familiarise yourself with.

I’m open to and interested in exhibition opportunities, collaborations, representation, and teaching engagements online or in person- I am particularly keen to partner with colleges and universities for continuing education. Please do reach out.

I am excited to have some summer workshops programmed at Penumbra Foundation in NYC and will be back for my fifth year!  Those of you familiar with Penumbra or me are probably well aware of how psyched I am to be a part of their community.

This summer has another exciting round of (my favourite) Mordançage (August 12th & 13th )now SOLD OUT - you can still contact Penumbra to get on the waitlist or register interest for future classes.

I have two workshops with DIY Developers (August 10th & 17th). I’ll be introducing students to Caffenol for Film and Paper.

We have a member's day scheduled for Anthotypes (August 15th) programmed to prepare for and celebrate World Anthotype Day. It is totally worth becoming a member.

Lastly, with Penumbra news, I’m excited to introdue Calotypes (August 19th and 20th), which is quickly filling.

Thanks, Ingrid, for the wicked cute photo of us during the Caffenol with Film Workshop at Penumbra in December. I really cherish the experiences and friendships I make here.

During the pandemic, I introduced my Eco Darkroom course online, which is also offered in person covering Anthotypes, Chemigrams, Lumens, DIY Developers for film and paper, and combinations of chemical processes with an empowering DIY ethos.

I am offering this class online through Eventbrite and in-person through Stills Centre for Photography (I have a Kallitype weekend scheduled for June 17th/18th with a couple of spaces left and am in the midst of programming workshops and courses for late Autumn and Winter now).

In April, I presented my work and the Eco Darkroom course during an event scheduled for Scotland's Workshops Week centred on Photography and Sustainability (in their socials campaign, they featured student work from my class too!). Hearing other artists discuss their ideas and projects was good, as was catching up with familiar faces.

Thank you for reading this far. I do appreciate it. I love the sound of my typing and manage to be ever-verbose. Please drop me a line and let me know what you’re up to. Again, You won't receive more than two of these from me a year.

All the best and hopefully see you somewhere this summer,
