Let's talk about sex, baby!

Yo Lovelies,

WE WISH YOU ALL A HAPPY VALENTINE WEEK!

As we celebrate love this month, we thought of making it a bit spicy for you guys.  Yes, we are discussing sexual desire and physical intimacy in this edition.

Do you find yourself lovable, sensual, and attractive?

Do you feel that your romantic/marital relationship can get better with open communication and better intimacy experiences thereof?

How often are ‘you’ the initiator of a pleasurable experience?

Do you avoid/ feel shy to openly express your desires because you think ‘women don’t ask for it’?

If most of your answers are negative, you are not alone!

It is true that many of us don’t think of ourselves as sexual beings. More so, as we grow older, with hormonal changes and declining body image during the menopausal transition, there is an evident drop in libido.

To top this, after we have a certain number of children (stipulated as ideal by society) or are past a certain age, the desire to involve in amorous activities is mocked, frowned upon, or even spelled out as unnecessary (yes, you heard that right!) in some cultural settings, mostly by women. 😐

We truly wish this narrative changes in the coming years. With movies on sensitive topics (like Badhaai Do (Hindi), which is based on pregnancy in the late 40s/50s) being received well by the public, we can say there is hope!

So, is the cultural conditioning to be blamed or is it because we don’t love ourselves enough to feel sexual?

Well, while we don’t have much control over the former, we can always start with ourselves. Don’t you agree? After all, everyone gets one life and has the right to make a choice.

Tip of the fortnight

Show yourself some LOVE! It is sure to rub on your dear one!

In the context of sexual life during midlife, we have a new blog post written by guest author, Sexologist Anka Grzywacz on how to keep up your sexual drive as you grow older.

Here are some words of wisdom from the expert:

  • Many women believe that getting older means losing your sex drive.

  • Hormonal changes of menopause may lead to a libido drop.

  • Your mental health may also impact your interest in sex.

  • To get your desire back as you age, you need to change your thinking about good sex.

Did you know?

Libido (sexual desire) in women is also influenced by testosterone besides the female reproductive hormone. In fact, recently, a global consensus statement on testosterone therapy for women with sexual desire disorders has been published by the International Society for the study of women’s sexual health.

However, this treatment option is in practice only in very few countries currently.

While it is clear that the public needs better sex education (including that masturbation DOES NOT cause any of the things mentioned), it is also gratifying that a majority of the population understands that mental health is involved in matters of physical intimacy.

What is your take on self-pleasure aka masturbation?  Here is a science-backed article on the (physical and mental health!) benefits of masturbation for you!
