Reyets Question of the Week: Are Airlines Required To Accommodate Disabilities?

With the holiday season around the corner, some might be traveling to visit family and friends.

Here's the answer to this question that might arise:

Yes. Airlines must accommodate the needs of air travelers with disabilities. Due to the Air Carrier Access Act, airlines can not discriminate against individuals because of their disability.

Did you know that airlines are required to provide assistance (i.e a wheelchair or other guided assistance to board, deplane, or connect to another flight; seating accommodation assistance that meets passengers’ needs; and assistance with the loading and stowing of assistive devices).

If you feel you or someone you know has experienced discrimination, based on disability, you can submit a complaint to the US Department of Transportation and inform your airline service representative.

Civil Rights Pioneer

Do You Know "The Mother of Disability Rights"?

Meet Judy Heumann

Judith (Judy) Heumann is a lifelong advocate for the rights of disabled people. In 1949, she contracted polio in Brooklyn, New York and began to use a wheelchair for her mobility. She was denied the right to attend school because she was considered a "fire hazard" at the age of five. Her parents played a strong role in fighting for her rights as a child, but Judy soon determined that she, working in collaboration with other disabled people, had to play an advocacy role due to continuous discrimination.

Throughout her life, Judy has traveled in her motorized wheelchair to countries on every continent, in urban and rural communities alike. She has played a role in the development and implementation of major legislation including the IDEA, Section 504, the Americans with Disability Act and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Judith also served in the Clinton and Obama Administration and was a Senior Fellow at the Ford Foundation.

She is now an internationally recognized leader in the disability rights community. She's an author, T.E.D. talk presenter, television personality, and revolutionist. She recently released her memoir "Being Heumann: An Unrepentant Memoir of a Disability Rights Activist," written with Kristen Joiner. Judy is now the producer of The Heumann Perspective, a podcast and YouTube channel that aims to share the beauty of the disabled community.

ACLU Files Lawsuit Against Alabama's Racial Gerrymandering Efforts

Gerrymandering occurs when state legislators draw direct boundaries to secure district advantages. In short, gerrymandering is an undemocratic tactic partisan state legislatures use to their advantage. The state of Alabama has reframed their districts (gerrymandering), on the terms of race, to benefit their partisan agenda. As of November 16, 2021, the American Civil Legal Union (ACLU) filed two federal lawsuits to challenge Alabama’s newly drawn state legislative and congressional districts.

The ACLU statement regarding these lawsuits and the redistricting of Alabama's districts:

"All the people of Alabama, no matter their race, deserve fair state legislative and congressional districts. Redistricting affects representation, and representation affects everything else, from our schools to our health care to our criminal justice system. Alabama’s electoral maps fail to meet the Constitution’s guarantee of equal protection under the laws to citizens of all races, and fail the test of fundamental fairness as well. Alabamians deserve better."
