Dear Friends of Bloomshine, Today marks the second anniversary of Evan's passing. Although he is separated from his earthly bonds, Evan is always near: through your eyes as you see a beautiful tree, through your ears as you listen to music, through your hands as you create, and in all of our hearts as we reflect upon our memories. We lost Evan on May 28, 2019, and on May 14, 2021, we welcomed a new life: |

Hazel Evan Harmon was born to Evan's sister, Lexi, and her husband, Ernie, in San Francisco. We couldn't be happier having her to love and cherish. |

May is also the time when school ends and a second phase of life begins for young graduates. With that, we are pleased to announce that the recipient of the Ansel Evan Clayburn music scholarship is Sy Anderson! |

Sy Anderson is a composer and vocalist from Campolindo High School in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he sings in the Chamber Singers and Concert Choir ensembles. He is a peer tutor to the Freshman Chorale ensemble and has played leading roles in several musical theater productions. He has been composing for more than two years, studying in the John Adams Young Composers Program with the Crowden Music Center this year. He will be attending Indiana University Bloomington in the fall, studying music composition at the Jacobs School of Music. Here are a few excerpts from Sy's scholarship application that reminded us of Evan: - I am a composer and a classical/choral vocalist. I also enjoy playing guitar.
- Being a part of ensembles and affecting others through music is deeply rewarding for me as a person.
- Music is the way I feel accomplished, alive, and I have a purpose.
- Many of my friends know me to be a media enthusiast and video game collector... I am very passionate about video games as an art form and enjoy collecting for fun and as a form of preservation.
- I am an Eagle Scout, Troop 249.
Sy's comments upon receiving the scholarship: "The legacy of Ansel Evan Clayburn, along with this award, are very meaningful and inspiring for me. I am very grateful. I often wonder if my work as a musician will leave my own mark on the world, like Evan’s has. His work inspires my own creativity as it embodies something I believe to be essential, genuine, and honest. Evan’s work is lovable, beautifully unique, and it is clear that every moment is filled with his authentic passion for making art. It is hard to miss. As I pursue my own career making art, I am sure Evan’s mark on the world will serve as a reminder of why this work is so important, and that life and love are worth celebrating." Big congratulations to Sy! We wish him the very best of luck. |
