Happy Valentine’s Day!

The holiday prompted my daughter (10) to ask me a question last night before bed:  "What do you really love Dad?"

Well, I explained, "I love (my wife) Megan (because she is a primary source for all my inspirations). I love (my daughter) Mairéad (because she gives me purpose and accountability). And, I love my friends because they give me someone to share experiences with!"

Pretty shocking answers right?! But when I woke up this morning, I felt like there needed to be more to that answer.

So, as they taught us in 1st grade, I pondered, what do all of these things have in common?

And then it hit me, and I laughed out loud.

They require a lot of work.

It’s true, all of these people exhaust me and they take up my most valued resources - time and energy.

Therefore, as I reflected on this conundrum, while trying to find something poetic to offer, I decided I needed to add work to my list of things I love.

"Rory – What exactly do you mean by work?"

Since defining our terms is an important part of reducing uncertainty in communication, I did some research to help us share a common definition:

... Hey Google, “What is the definition of work?” ...

Ultimately, I found a definition from the world of physics that really resonated with me.

In physics the concept of work is defined as: force applied over distance.

The reference to force, makes me think of communication.

And the reference to distance, makes me think of time.

With this definition in hand, it helped me to understand that I love work because it represents what is required to create meaningful relationships:

sustained effective communication over a period of time.

When we think of work, we often have a negative or at least neutral connotation towards the concept.

However, if we choose to see our partners, friends, family, or anyone for that matter, as something we love, then we must also choose to love the work that is required to sustain the outcomes that bring us joy.

So for me - love is work and work is love.

I firmly believe that effective communication is both challenging and inherently exhausting, but when done with great effort and intention it is capable of producing life’s greatest joys.

If you love someone (and we know you do!), then let it be your mission to work on your communication with them in a dedicated manner.

Be a force of communication every day for a sustained period of time.

Listen with energy.

Speak with intention.

Move with purpose.

Work at love, and maybe love will work a little harder for you.

♥️

Happy Valentine's Day.

May your life be filled with love (and meaningful work) every single day.
