END OF THE YEAR Newsletter

We're almost one. I think that's 13.5 in tiny business years.

I'm working with this serif font because I think this template is sexy and because I'm trying to be more relaxed about shit. Also if you can remove the white background from my logo holler.  If you're here for digest materials skip the next paragraph it's SO EARNEST.

just doing it.

Entrepreneurs like to talk about "surviving" their first year, and I get it - truly.  This isn't my first year in business but it's the year I took on a level of liability that would could/would truly alter my future either way, and by extension, that of my child's.   I've lost a lot of sleep worrying about debt and credit - and all the others means of exposure involved in this business.  We're told the risk is necessary to reap the kind of rewards we desire from the system; it may prove true - I honestly hope that it does.  I don't have much of a back-up plan, though I write this with an awareness the safety net a middle class background provides, one I try not to take for granted the confidence it affords is staggering.  It occurs to me that this "risk taking" is actually a privilege, among many.

Profitability tends to be focus of any discussion of "success in business" but as we approach our anniversary here at the cafe - I'm trying to look past that metric and zero in on the thing that most surprised me this year.

In short - my customers, this community SLAYED IT, and in the process made me better.  (long version continued up and to the right, this sexy template wasn't made for long winded love noting, please continue)

I've been waiting tables since I was a teen and 20 years of anything will make a person sick of any subject. This long experience coupled with the Election  -  I was F'ING DONE with human kind.  In giving this whole brick and mortar thing a go, the decision process included steeling myself for several more years of direct customer service.   Not only was I wrong headed about the work I'd be doing, in being so old wounds are healed and healing.

Because you all are freaking amazing.  The people I see in my shop are some of the most open, generous, loyal and kind I've ever known.  IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER: Cully residents, the Co-Motion crew, Maker's Row residents, long time Rawdacious cake lovers, friends who go out of their way to roll through, vegan homies, ALL OF YOU.  I'll never not want to see you, to chat with you, to make your drinks and your special sandos, to hear your stories.  Your full and loving embrace of this little thing I'm doing, in all its fits and starts and mason jars, has restored to a marvelous degree my faith in the goodness of humans.

Screw losing sleep over $, I'm RICH AF.

Thank you.  JP

Anyhoo - did someone say birthday ?

Tiny Moreso's birthday is January 5th and there will be free cake for everyone. Whitney and I just googled "fancy vegan sprinkles" which just begged the question "why do we not ALWAYS have fancy vegan sprinkles Whitney?" Turns out the ingredient list isn't pretty but we're making an exception

THIS ONE DAY OBVIOUSLY. Come party, 10 am - 6 pm 1/5/19.

Shameless commerce division.

Hey we sell stuff.

Really good stuff.

Most of it will fit in a stocking and/or meet the neato-torpedo requirements of your office white elephant ritual.

In summary, this stuff is for sale at the shop and maybe you can buy it.

Here are some other notes mixed with news.

  • We will be closed Dec 25th-28th to spruce the place up.  It'll be worth it.
  • The above pic was taken by my friend JD and I'm just checking to see if he's reading this.
  • NEW MENU - We're rolling out more menu items in January, including a rotating rice bowl.  New soups and stuff.  TM is here for your whole 30 and your cleanses and resolutions.  I'm doing the same.
  • My favorite adult is opening up his second shop any day now, and it's gorgeous.
  • We cater, we do private events.  Plan the revolution while eating radical food, and keep me posted about said revolution, thanks!
