where ideas come from

It happened again. I never know where my book ideas really come from. I also wonder if the ideas will someday stop, and I'll have to find another passion to fill my days.

It's a little different with Tequila Midnight. There, I've built a cast of characters and sets of problems that are already unwinding themselves into multiple stories. The sequel, El Diablo, comes out in August and you'll hear more about it soon. I'm in the midst of writing the third book in the series and have a clear idea of how the series will unfold.

But I also write books that are one-offs. The ideas for those books seem to come to me from the ether. They aren't quite fully formed, but when the idea hits, I have a strong sense of the plot and characters. I spend a few days playing with the idea, usually roughing out a theme and a plot. Sometimes I even write a prologue or the first chapter. A conversation with a friend sparked Five Tries to Get It Right, a deal I worked on at the City of Carlsbad sparked The Podcast Chronicles.

A new book sparked last week while I listened to the nonfiction book Democracy in Chains. The book made me angry, and I honestly struggled to get through it. Then an idea came to me - what if...? And my brain took off in a direction I never expected. For now, I'll let that spark incubate while I finish the novel I'm working on, then, we'll see where it goes.

Do you ever have those "what if" moments that end up changing what you'll do next?

I'd love to hear about it. Just hit reply to this email.

I've been excited to see the reviews of Five Tries to Get It Right. Readers seem to enjoy the travel and the heartfelt friendship between these two women as they struggle to figure out what's next in life. One reviewer said the novel was:

"heart warming even while it is breaking your heart."

I'd love it if you'd leave a review - just a couple of sentences will help others find it. Click a button below to start your review.

Happy Travels: Engadine Valley, Switzerland

I love how you can spend all day hiking up a mountain in the Swiss Alps, and you get near the top and find a cute restaurant serving sausages and beer.
