The Referendum: national and local results

The October 14 Referendum on enshrining a Voice to Parliament in the Constitution was defeated in every State and by the majority of people across Australia.Only the ACT returned a majority Yes vote, though as a Territory its result only counted towards the national total.

Mackellar Referendum results

With more than 92% of votes counted, the result in Mackellar is much closer and went in favour of Yes at 50.8%. Note that more than 1,000 votes were informal (not counted) either in error or on purpose. A more detailed breakdown of Mackellar results can be found here

If you are looking for a fuller story of how the country voted we can recommend this largely visual analysis: Beyond No, here’s what we know about the Voice results . Of note is that the voting patterns for the Voice referendum are virtually unchanged from the Republic referendum of 23 years ago.

The analysis closes with the following:

Neither side of the Voice debate denied the need for Australia to create a better future for First Nations children. But, by majority vote, Australians have made clear that a constitutionally enshrined Voice to Parliament is not how they want to respond to these crises. An urgent question emerges — what is?
