Remembering Barbara Walters

Barbara Walters has provided Americans with honest, insightful journalism since 1976 when she became the first anchorwoman on an evening news broadcast. She interviewed a remarkable range of people from America's presidents and first ladies to foreign dictators. She passed away on December 30th, 2022. Walters was bold and witty and has left behind an admirable legacy of fact-finding and truth-telling that will be difficult for future journalists to match.

The Saddest Little Man

Book Launch

Little Man is a spoiled brat. He’s completely self-centered and will stop at nothing to get his way and maintain his cushy lifestyle and power. Unfortunately for his step-sister, she has become the target of his abuse, and everyone seems oblivious to how horrible he is! We’ve all felt the sting of injustice in our lives, and our kids are no different. Sometimes people (or institutions) seem out to get us, and it feels like no one will listen. The Saddest Little Man is a hilarious story that will have your kids cracking up but will also help them deal with the anger and helplessness they feel when confronted with unfairness.

Do We Have Marriage Equality in the U.S.?

On December 13, 2022, President Biden signed the Respect for Marriage Act. While this act is a massive step in the right direction, it falls short of guaranteeing marriage equality in America. It does not require states to grant marriage certificates to same-sex or biracial couples. However, it does require all states to recognize marriages performed in other states. It also guarantees that all married couples can access federal benefits, such as Social Security survivor benefits. We have more work to do if we want all Americans to be treated equally under the law.

Birth Control Under Attack

A federal judge in Texas, Matthew Kacsmaryk, has ruled in Deanda v. Becerra that Title X, a federal program that provides family planning services to adults and adolescents, violates parents' constitutional right to direct the education and raising of their children. He's requiring the federal government to stop giving grants to programs that don't require teens under 18 to "obtain parental consent" to receive medical care using Title X funds. Previous to this case, adolescents' right to privacy enabled them to receive family planning services without parental consent. If another court does not block it, the fallout from this will be an increase in teen pregnancy. Add that to a lack of maternal healthcare and abortion access, and we have a big problem!

Abortion Bans Lead Doctors to Refuse to Provide Medical Care to Women

The abortion ban in Louisiana has doctors too afraid of being investigated by the government to offer women the medical care they need during the first weeks of pregnancy. In order to avoid investigations, doctors in Louisiana are simply refusing to see women until after the 12th week of pregnancy, since that's when 80% of miscarriages happen. Because miscarriages are treated either by administering the drugs misoprostol and mifepristone or by dilation and curettage, which are the same procedures used in abortion, doctors fear providing these treatments. This leaves women to suffer through miscarriages at home, without the aid of medical guidance or potentially life-saving medicine. A woman named Kaitlyn Joshua was actually denied treatment for her miscarriage at two different emergency rooms as the physicians refused to diagnose her condition as a miscarriage. Abortion bans hurt women. It's time to fight back.

Trump calls for "Termination" of the Constitution

On December 4, 2022, on his social networking site, Truth Social, Donald Trump posted this:

"Do you throw the Presidential Election Results of 2020 OUT and declare the RIGHTFUL WINNER, or do you have a NEW ELECTION? A Massive Fraud of this type and magnitude allows for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution.”

Donald Trump is an enemy of democracy.

Anger Becomes Her: The Power of Women's Anger

by Soraya Chemaly

"As women, we've been urged for so long to bottle up our anger, letting it corrode our bodies and minds in ways we don't even realize. Yet there are so, so many legitimate reasons for us to feel angry, ranging from blatant, horrifying acts of misogyny to the subtle drip, drip drip of daily sexism that reinforces the absurdly damaging gender norms of our society. In Rage Becomes Her, Soraya Chemaly argues that our anger is not only justified, it is also an active part of the solution. We are so often encouraged to resist our rage or punished for justifiably expressing it, yet how many remarkable achievements would never have gotten off the ground without the kernel of anger that fueled them? Approached with conscious intention, anger is a vital instrument, a radar for injustice and a catalyst for change. On the flip side, the societal and cultural belittlement of our anger is a cunning way of limiting and controlling our power--one we can no longer abide. "A work of great spirit and verve" (Time), Rage Becomes Her is a validating, energizing read that will change the way you interact with the world around you."
