CHRISTMAS IN ITALY

NATALE (CHRISTMAS)

December, in Italy, is the month of celebrations together with the family. From the end of November you can breathe the Christmas atmosphere everywhere, from small villages to huge cities. Here are some curiosities about the month of December that you can tell your friends:

December 8th is a statutory holiday throughout Italy and the Immaculate Conception is celebrated. According to the Christian religion, in this day Italians celebrate the religious dogma in which it was sanctioned that the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus Christ, was born and was conceived without Original Sin.

How do Italians celebrate? First of all, it is traditional to decorate the Christmas tree and make the "presepe" during this festivity. It's a national holiday, so schools and offices are closed.

IL PRESEPE

What is it? The term "presepe" represents the Nativity of Bethlehem. In Italy, every family has a presepe, and starting December 8, Italian families set up their "presepi" inside their homes, taking great pride in creating very elaborate scenes with lighting, backdrops, running water and multiple figures. However, Baby Jesus is never placed in the crib until Christmas Eve.

WATCH A MOVIE BY AN ITALIAN FILM DIRECTOR IN VANCOUVER

"Residents of Arcadia,"

a movie by Domenico Cutrupi

Two successful online influencers are confronted with the appearance of a mysterious countdown on their mirrors that threatens to reveal what's behind their apparently perfect life.

Residents of Arcadia is a film about the immigrant experience; more specifically, it's the story of an Italian man and an Indian woman in search for an ideal life in Canada. Sci-fi approach aside, the tale is based on the director's experience as an immigrant from Italy to Canada and stories of Indian immigrants he encountered in his journey to become a Canadian citizen. The main theme of the film is the clash of the immigrant's cultural identity against a new society while searching for a new ideal self.
