Kate Flanagan came to Jubilee Springs as a mail order bride for one of the local miners. Although she initially preferred another man with whom she corresponded, the major draw for accepting the proposal she did was that her sister lived in the same town. Only after she arrives does she realize another woman has claimed his heart.

Garland McAllister works as the Jubilee Springs ticket agent for the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad. Having been a stutterer all his life, he has dealt with ridicule and social rejection by developing quiet interests, like reading and cooking. He soon finds himself drawn to Kate, especially after he rescues her from a train wreck. Unfortunately, she came to town to become another man’s wife. Since she cannot be his, and it is unlikely he will easily find a woman willing to marry a stutterer, he decides to fulfill his other dream—becoming a chef. He starts the new year by opening his own restaurant during the weekend hours he does not work for the railroad. But how can he manage employees—assuming he can eventually afford to hire some—or take food orders when the more stress he’s under, the more difficult he finds it to speak clearly?

In spite of careful planning, on opening night, more people than Garland anticipated show up to order supper. Things begin to fall apart and failure rears its ugly head. Along with his heart, is his business doomed? Or will he succeed in fulfilling both his dreams?

Ruby Fulton has had a tough life, and it isn’t getting any easier after her husband dies. Suffering under his abuse for years, all Ruby wants is independence, peace and a new chance at life. She is barely scraping by herself, and now she’s responsible for one of Last Chance’s orphaned children. The last thing she wants to do is sign herself up for another husband who will make her life miserable. But when the preacher insists that she marry again, what is a woman to do?

Cullen Parker is determined to leave his past behind him and live an honest life. When he hears about Last Chance, Nebraska, he’s sure it is the perfect place to find work. He agrees to work on Ruby’s farm in exchange for room and board, but he definitely isn’t looking for a wife.

It seems like the perfect arrangement, but the town pastor sees a scandal. He insists they get married if Cullen is going to stay. What happens when Cullen offers a marriage of convenience? When Cullen’s criminal past comes calling, the precarious balance of trust and convenience is threatened. Will they—or their marriage—survive?

Could Last Chance hold the answers for both of them?

Isabel Merriweather was born to become a southern belle from a rice plantation in South Carolina. When her parents become deceased during the Civil War, Aunt Margaret from Atlanta takes her under her wing. With a knack for trouble and no fiancé in sight, Isabel has grown past the customary marrying age and her aunt has become weary of finding her niece a suitable match. Desperate, Aunt Margaret ships Belle to a northern matchmaker in the hopes an unorthodox approach will succeed.

When another mail-order bride in want of a husband and two completely different marriage prospects greet Isabel upon her arrival in Pelican Rapids, a comedy of errors ensues as Isabel and the other bride vie for the title of Belle of the Ball, and of course, a husband. With an arsonist afoot, there’s more than a little mayhem and mischief ahead, and plenty of suspense for the townsfolk of Pelican Rapids.
