We survived fair...barely!

Our fair has come to an end and I am currently about to loose it again. We are packing up the camper & the livestock trailer and heading to Des Moines. The kids will be competing at the American Junior Nationals for the Simmental Association. In addition to show their heifers, they will be competing in 4 other contests: Cattlemen's Quiz, Drake Evaluation Quiz, Livestock Judging and finally...public speaking. Since fair, we have be working hard at take the practice quizzes, preparing the speech, writing note cards and setting up the heifers.

We are slated to be gone 7 days and 6 nights. I have been meticulously putting together directions for when we are gone. I realized...that I have not been gone longer than 2 days from this place. Hence the reason, I subconscious figured out I needed to come home on Monday after being there for 3 days. Wade and the kids stayed in at the camper during our county fair the whole time... I was solo at home. There is just something about home.

The days continue to fly by and I never seem to get enough done. We are knee-deep in puppy curriculum with our two litters and the kids are thoroughly enjoying it. We are planning our Fall Litters and are looking forward to them!

Here's to the rest of the summer...

Fireworks...for days

America's Birthday! Yahhooooo! With it being on a Tuesday this year, it also means that there is more than enough celebrating. Around our house, there has been fireworks going o for the last 8 days.

Here are my top tips:

  1. Take your dog on walks early. Get in plenty of exercise before 12:00 p.m. so they don't have to hear the fireworks and help wear them out.

  2. Find them a quiet place, such as their kennel. I can stress enough how important it is that a dog has a place all their own that they feel safe in.

  3. Keep them indoors as much as possible

  4. Provide distractions such as music or treats.

Puppy-proofing your home

See that innocent face? Ha! Just yesterday he completely terrorized my house. Regardless of how it's been, I always forget what it's like to have a puppy.

First and foremost, puppy proof your home. To start, get down on your hands and knes. Look at it from your pet's view.

When you look at something from a completely different view, you will notice things you didn't before. Dangling cords, scent plug ins, shoes, and in our case yesterday... a 24 pack of water bottles. They are now strewn all over the landing and tiny pieces of plastic are everywhere...

One thing you need to make sure you are conscious of, is counters. I have a guilty habit of leaving stuff on the counter so it is "off the table." Thinking that the dogs can't get to it...well, just last week I walked into Baxter on the counter eating all the meat scraps from the previous night's dinner. I didn't realize he would jump from the table to the counter, I mean it is only 4 feet. But still! My counters are just loaded with stuff. So, make sure you keep anything that could be dangerous to your dog put up in cabinets so no emergencies happen.

Use gates. In our home, we have just one set of stairs leading to the basement. We have a gate at the top pf the stairs so that no dogs can down the stairs and get into trouble. Also, puppies should not go down stairs until they are at least 12 weeks old, larger breeders is recommended to wait even longer.

There are so many more things to look at when puppy-proofing your home. I highly recommend starting with these two!

When we send puppies home, we send a sample of our favorite pet shampoo from Monat. I signed up to be a Market Partner 5 years ago when they launched and believe in all their products 100%

I used their haircare and skincare line. So does Sydney and Jackson. Wade still uses Melaleuca...it's about the only thing that gets piggy smells out, LOL!

If you are interested in getting some or the spray, here is a link.
