Improving parks. Connecting communities.

PARRC News - Winter 2023

PARRC Region Expands to Eight

Throughout the second half of 2022, the seven municipalities of PARRC worked to welcome its newest member, Washington Township, Berks County. Washington Township is adjacent to current PARRC member Douglass Township, Montgomery County and has two main parks, Barto Community Park and Athletic Fields (19 acres) and Washington Park, Annex, and Open Space (38 acres). Other parks include Forgedale Park, a small scenic area along the West Branch of the Perkiomen Creek, and various open space parcels. Township Manager, Rich Sichler, said "Washington Township is very excited to join PARRC for the access to recreation professionals it provides, the shared knowledge of recreational solutions amongst the group members and the cooperative recreational efforts with other municipalities in the region." PARRC is glad to have Washington Township on board and looks forward to working together to advance park and recreation projects in the region.

Year-end Project Wrap-Up

By the end of 2022, the communities of PARRC completed important park and recreation projects that continue to enhance active and passive recreation opportunities in the Pottstown region. Upper Pottsgrove Township developed a new Master Plan for Hollenbach Park with funding from the Pottstown Area Health & Wellness Foundation. The Borough of Pottstown installed new play equipment in Washington West Park, also with PAHWF funding. The PECO Green Region grant program provided funding to Upper Pottsgrove to plant 45 trees in Sussell Park, a passive use park with hiking trails and fishing ponds. The program also provided funding to East Coventry to complete the Wildcat Trail at East Coventry Elementary. Funding from the Schuylkill Highlands Conservation Landscape Minigrant Program funded new park entrance signs at East Coventry Preserve. PARRC thanks all funders that helped make these projects possible.

New Funding for PARRC Projects

PARRC is pleased to announce that the Pottstown Area Health & Wellness Foundation has awarded funding for several new projects. Douglass Township was awarded $14,000 for trail improvements in Douglass Community Park. Pottstown received $40,000 for the Riverfront Park Pedestrian Bridge Repair project and PARRC received $8,000 toward development of a community recreation survey. Finally, the Borough of Pottstown received $239,000 from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources for improvements to Chestnut Street Park. PARRC thanks these funders for their continued support of park and recreation projects in the PARRC region.
