Flood Days: "Fourth week straight"

"Fourth week straight" was a comment that came in with another round of MyCoast photos submitted last week for the Deal Island Peninsula. MyCoast users from the Deal Island Peninsula region have submitted photos consistently throughout the year showcasing the frequency and extent of flooding and highlighting the very real challenges faced by residents such as repeat days when the school bus is unable to get students.

Back in the April issue of the newsletter, we shared a graph of the winter flood days according to the Bishop's Head tide gauge. The graph showed that 2024 had more flood days in December, January, and February than had been seen in the 20 year history of the tide gauge. That trend has continued throughout the year. The graph below shows the total number of flood days for 2020-2024. Even though 2024 isn't over, it has already recorded many more flood days than previous years. While this is a trend that can be seen at multiple tide gauges across the state of Maryland, the increase in flood days is worse at the Bishop's Head and Annapolis tide gauges.

There are many factors contributing to the flooding experienced in the Deal Island Peninsula region including poor drainage and sea level rise.

There's still time to comment: Somerset County is still collecting feedback on the new Comprehensive Plan.

Somerset County is in the process of updating its Comprehensive plan, sometimes referred to as a Master Plan. Comprehensive plans set a vision for how a county will develop. You can learn more about Somerset County’s process on their comprehensive plan website: https://www.plansomersetmd.org/.

Public comment and feedback is an important part of the comprehensive planning process. Currently, Chapters 2 through 8 as well as the Vision Statement are up on the website and available for public comment.
