This month's pick for Student of the Month is Betty Barker a 1 year old Bernadoodle. Betty Barker has grown immensely through her training at Dogsmartz Unleashed. She has successfully completed beginner, intermediate, and advanced obedience training . She loves coming to school with Miss April. April is patient, creative, and loving. Betty has been successfully spending time at her mom's school (Joseph Badger) where she loves the students and staff. Betty is very well behaved and provides a great sense of calm for everyone. Betty will be moving into the Therapy Dog class at Dogsmartz. She will join the puppy brigade at Akron's Children Hospital and become a therapy dog at Rossi Funeral Home in Niles. Betty brings smiles to everyone she meets. We couldn't have been so lucky to have a great team surrounding her with love and support. With much love, The Barkers. |

June 2023: Fear Free Focus By Karen Becker Therapy Dog Choice: What does it take to be a Therapy Dog? ~Karen Becker, CPDT-KA, Ph.D and DSU’s Therapy Dog Prep trainer What does a Therapy Dog do? First and foremost, a therapy dog is a partner of a volunteer team – you and your dog. The team “visits” nursing homes, retirement centers, hospitals, schools, veteran’s centers, day cares, libraries and university settings. The goal is to provide comfort, entertainment, and perhaps a little education to those you visit. In some settings, the visit is a diversion from the mundane or traumatic environment. Imagine being in a hospital for several days or weeks, same room, same TV, same monitors – and there’s a knock at your door. A stranger asks if they can come in to introduce you to Jasper, their Golden Retriever! This is usually a welcome event as Jasper happily enters the room, sits to be petted and possibly performs some tricks, before nicely taking a treat from his new friend. Therapy Dog Team Meeting Several certified teams and teams-in-training have been invited to participate in some fun local events since December. So, in March a group of Dogsmartz Unleashed clients met with me to begin our own therapy dog group – hoping to be a clearinghouse of visiting opportunities for certified therapy teams in the tri-county area, as well as support for Therapy Dog and CGC preparation. Two group names and subsequent logos, as well some basic foundational guidelines and mission statement are being drawn up by a planning group who will present them to the larger group on Wednesday, June 14, 2023, at Boardman Library (7680 Glenwood Ave, Youngstown, OH). The meeting will begin at 6:00 p.m. All Dogsmartz Unleashed clients are welcome! Questions can be directed to me: karenb@dogsmartzunleashed.com |

No dog is EVER turned away regardless of behavior or breed, and no dog “fails” at DSU. Some dogs will have immediate success and others will need more time. Training is a process, and at Dogsmartz we believe in helping our students reach their goals. If a student is struggling, we will work with you to find ways to get success. If you put the work in, we will be there to support you through your training journey. Training is not a pass/fail. It is a process of acquiring knowledge, developing skills, and becoming fluent in these skills. |

Private Training Sessions Privates can be done for specific behavior issues such as but not limited to fear, anxiety, aggression or if basic training (obedience/manners) is desired. The initial private session is 90 minutes long. Based upon the information provided to us on our behavior history form, we will prepare a preliminary plan. Upon arrival, we will first observe the situation, implement management changes and teach new skills sets. After the visit, we will provide a typed Behavior Treatment Plan for you to keep and use as a blueprint to work from. For any behavior issues, we will also send letter to your Veterinarian (if you approve) to advise them of our observations and our plan moving forward. We will work closely with your veterinarian in cases that require this. The plan will be adjusted accordingly based upon our observations and may be further adjusted as we discuss progress in the weeks ahead. You will have access to us for the lifetime of your pet after your visit via phone, text or email for any questions and/or concerns. We request you provide us updates weekly or however often is needed via phone, email or text. If you attend a private session at our facility, we do require your dog to be vaccinated with the following: Rabies, Bordetella, Distemper and a negative fecal. |
