Fall/Winter 2022

Supporting the holistic health of West Virginia's children and their families through trust-based philanthropy.

What We’re Up To:

Going Beyond the Check

Over the past several months, the SSJHWF has been committed to becoming partners beyond the check--a key practice in trust-based philanthropy. We do this in a number of ways: connecting nonprofits to additional funding opportunities, marketing events and awareness campaigns, and developing and offering trainings across the state. Recently, we supported Partners in Community Outreach by sponsoring their campaign to highlight the importance of in-home family education programs like Parents as Teachers and Healthy Families America to legislators in Charleston. The event brought programs together with families to engage in a fun day of learning and advocacy. Pictures above were taken during the event by 84 Agency.

Additional ways we've gone beyond the check this past quarter are below:

  1. SSJHWF Executive Director is now a certified trainer in the Strengthening Families approach through the Children's Trust Fund and has delivered the training which covers changing our lens, addressing bias, and focusing on the protective factors to social service providers, prevention summits, and schools. To request a training, contact us.

  2. Partnered with the WV ACEs Coalition to provide the first statewide train-the-trainer workshop on ACEs 101 (Awareness), ACEs 102 (Resiliency), and ACEs 103 (Prevention/Positive Experiences). 30 trainers that represent every county and multiple backgrounds are now trained to deliver the training across the state.

  3. Co-hosted a Mental Wellness Workshop with the Community Foundation of the Ohio Valley and River Valley Foundation designed to support nonprofit professionals and community partners through exposure to burnout prevention techniques and team-based approaches to stress reduction.

Grant Partner Spotlight:

The Marvel Center

Our partners at The Marvel Center have been building a culture of early childhood development  to address the burden of not having a childcare facility within 300 miles within the Meadow-River Valley. In addition to opening the center during a pandemic, Marvel's hardworking board and staff have recently partnered with WVU Extension Service to host Apprenticeship Child Development Specialist (ACDS) class, This 4-semester, workforce development course is an established pathway for early child educator professional development allowing educators to move from an entry level Aide to a Teacher certification. The majority of Marvel’s instructors and a number from the Greenbrier County school system will be attending.

Marvel recently received a Community Connections grant to open a Family Support Center which will provide on-site direct services, parenting support, and mental health support to families in the community.

Funding Opportunities

West Virginia will be receiving a historic amount of settlement moneys in response to the devastating losses our state has experienced due to the opioid crisis. According to the MOU, the funding process will involve starting a private, nonprofit foundation for the purposes of receiving and distributing opioid funds, as well as a percentage going directly to city and county governments. Local nonprofits should contact their local governments to learn how funding will be distributed and the important role nonprofits play in the prevention and recovery of our community. For more information on the opioid settlement funds, contact Drema Hill at dhill@osteo.wvsom.edu
