Poush Purnima is one of the most sacred and auspicious days which takes place on the full moon day in the month of Poush as per the Hindu calendar. It is widely believed that on this special day, a dip in the sacred rivers at the the pilgrimage centres, observing austerities, performing divine pujas and giving to charities helps one get rid of sins and makes one's life more fruitful.
Our scriptures have many references to this day. In Maharashtra it is celebrated as Poush Navaratra when ParaAmba is worshipped as Shakambari Devi, decked with ornaments of vegetables and greens. In the Devi Purana there are references to Amba's varadan that she would come to Bhuloka to rescue people during a drought when all beings would be hungry. She would then appear on earth to save mortals in the form of Shakambari, the name itself meaning she would fill the earth with all the greenery of plentiful vegetables and fruits with her divine power. It is on this day of Poush Purnima when she appeared on Bhulok as Maa Shakambari.
She is also be known as "Satakshi", referred to in Sri Lalita Sahastranamam as "Saharakshi".
Indeed ParaAmba is the essence of all power, compassion and prosperity. As per the Puranas, Amba also appeared as " Brahmarambika" who wielded her power to kill Arunasu, an asura.
