National Conference Recap Part 2 NGIA National Conference - The Growing Edge Hobart Tasmania 19 - 21 February 2018 |
Every two years a national Nursery & Garden Industry Conference is held in an Australian city and over the past 30 years it has attracted a committed group of growers, retailers and suppliers to the Australian nursery and garden industry. This year the NGIA National Conference was held in Hobart, Tasmania and here is a small snapshot of what happened in our beautiful city. Apart from turning on some great weather - we also showed our interstate visitors a great time. |

NGIA National Conference The Growing Edge Hobart 19 -21 Feb, 2018 NGIA’s National Conference started off with two pre-conference tours; Retail and Wholesale Nursery Tours. These tours were well supported by our interstate delegates and both tours showed what a selection of Tasmanian nurseries have to offer. |
First stop - Tibballs Nursery |
The Wholesale Tour headed out to Tibballs Nursery - a third generation family owned wholesale nursery business, specialising in vegetable seedlings, herbs, tomatoes, strawberries, potted colour, cyclamens, chrysanthemums and perennials. Tibballs Nursery operates with 21 staff members and is the largest wholesale seedling nursery in Tasmania. |
Morning Tea saw our group of visitors arrive at Granton Plants, on the banks of the Derwent River at the entrance to the beautiful Derwent Valley. Granton Plants is another family owned business who has been producing natives, shrubs and grasses for the landscaping industry for over 30 years. |
Horticultural and Landscape Supplies - HALS - in Brighton, is one of the largest wholesale businesses in Tasmania servicing plant growers, small independent nurseries, supermarkets and chain stores. |
Lunch was at the cellar door and home of the award winning Pooley Wines in the historic Butchers Hill Vinyard on the edge of Richmond in the Coal River Valley, the heart of Tasmania's famous wine producing region. After a delicious lunch of woodfired pizza and a sampling of Pooley wines - our group of visitors were encouraged to explore the quaint and historic Richmond Village. |
The final destination was Westland Nurseries, situated on the edge of beautiful Frederick Henry Bay in sleepy Seven Mile Beach. Westland Nurseries was established by the Vander Staay family in 1956 and has grown to a 30 hectare site specialising in the production and distribution of advanced trees and shrubs for the Tasmanian market. |
Mark and Tony Vander Staay took their interstate visitors on an extensive site tour covering propagation, soil mix production, mechanised potting procedures, water ctahment and distribution, green housing and product delivery. |
Both tours were well recieved by all our visitors, each tour showcasing diverse examples of Tasmanian nursery businesses. It is also good to note that most of the businesses involved in both tours are long established Tasmanian family businesses |
Many thanks to all those businesses that gave up their time to help promote our state and the Nursery and Garden Industry in Tasmania. |
