Managing Behaviors You Don't Want

May 2016             Issue Eleven

With clicker training, you can handle undesirable behaviors in various ways—without using punishment.

It's important to recognize that some behaviors you may not like are quite natural animal behaviors, and are best dealt with through household management. (The easiest way to keep your dog from chewing your kids football, for example, is to avoid leaving the football around your dog. Try this, get a caddy for kid's toys and a basket for dog toys!)

Remember: reward the behaviors you like, and find creative solutions to the behaviors you don't. Your dog wants to please you—and it's all about communication. That's where the clicker comes in.

Check out these articles on clickertraining.com, they have a search bar so you can search whatever you like, for example,I just put in "nipping" and got 4 results that I can like and want to read. The website also has videos, a library of articles if you're not quite sure what you want to search for, info on the Academy and ClickerExpo, A Find a Trainer page if I'm not in your area, and of course the store full of training gear, toys, treats, books, apparel, DVDs, clickers, and more!
