Emma Dues - June Newsletter

Hi everyone! Thank you again for signing up for my newsletter and following along. You'll be the first to know of any news...hopefully I'll have something exciting to share in the near future.

I would like to use this June newsletter to share more about what I'm reading. As a writer it is so important to me to be reading both within and outside of my "home" genre of thrillers. I know that reading from a variety of authors and books only makes me a better writer.

My Recent read, currently reading, & To be read

My Recent Read

Riley Sager is an auto-buy author for me. Every book he releases, I purchase. I love how his books blend the horror and thriller genres into a creepy thrill-ride that always keep the pages turning. LOCK EVERY DOOR was not my favorite Sager read, but I can't deny that I still sped through it desperate to figure out the twists. If you are an American Horror Story: Hotel fan, this book is definitely for you. Pick this one up if you want a book that takes place in a famous hotel with a dark history, follows a mess of a main character trying to figure out her life, and includes people who seemingly disappear out of thin air.

Currently Reading

I'm about 40% of the way through the audiobook of NINETEEN MINUTES. The audiobook is about 21 hours long so my loan at the library keeps expiring but, I will not stop renewing my loan until I finish this book because it's enthralling. This title was recommended to me by a good friend who is also a teacher and as an educator, this book is difficult but also necessary to get through. It is such a poignant story about a school shooting, the aftereffects of the tragedy, the events leading up to it, and the people involved from all sides. Picoult writes deep, expertly developed characters that really come to life on the page (or rather, through my car speakers). I can't wait to see how she wraps this story up.

To Be Read

This year, I finally watched all of Game of Thrones and it quickly became one of my favorite shows of all time. But, I have heard from many people that there were a lot of details from the books left out and I definitely want to see which direction George R. R. Martin takes the series for myself...hopefully he finishes the series and doesn't end it like Season 8 of the show. Technically I've read the first 100 pages of this book and so far I'm loving it, but I'm classifying it as "to be read" because I have the whole series ahead of me.

Emma's Monthly Movie Recommendation:

Synopsis: Grace gets married to her dream man at his family's luxurious, mansion estate. It seems like her life is going to be everything she's ever wanted, and more, until she is asked to play a game with the family the night of her wedding. As heirs to a billion-dollar game company, they play this traditional game whenever a new member joins the family. If they refuse, there are dire consequences. Grace plays along, thinking it's all harmless fun until she pulls the dreaded hide-and-seek card and quickly learns just how dangerous this game can be.

My Thoughts: This movie is a dark-comedy horror that never lets up on the action and thrills. There were parts that literally made me laugh out loud and others that had me cringing behind a blanket. It's not often that I watch a horror movie that's as unique as this one, and in my mind it's a modern classic. It's always one of my go-to suggestions when getting together with friends because it's equal parts funny and fear-inducing. This movie actually has a decent plot and isn't full of flat characters and predictable twists, which makes it stand out from other recent horror movies in my opinion.
