Rally! Season 2, Issue 13: April 2023

(Does that really still say Season 2? Yup! We’re rocking an extended Season 2 until we capture all PCA Member Teams’ “True Colors!” April is Cheer New York, May is Cheer Tacoma. Who knows what surprises will come next?)

Community & Culture

April showers us with cultural celebrations, observances, and awareness. #NationalVolunteerWeek (April 16-22), #LesbianVisibilityWeek (April 24-30), and #AutismAcceptance Month (all of April), to name a few. Did you know that PCA is 100% volunteer-powered? We even coined a special word: VolunCHEERleader! National Volunteer Week (#NVW) has become so important to PCA. We gather data from all of our Member Teams at the end of each year and use #NVW in April as an opportunity to thank our volunteers by shining a light on who they are and what they do. In this National Volunteer Week 2023 Video, we boast about the growth of PCA’s volunteer base and about our individual and aggregate contributions to the world, for which we have our volunteers to thank! Here are some of the incredible numbers:

  • New volunteers joining PCA in 2022: 202

  • Total volunteers in PCA across the nation in 2022: 526

  • Total donations given to charity by PCA & its Member Teams in 2022: $115,040

  • Lifetime giving total across PCA & its Member Teams: $1,438,905!!!!!

True Colors by Cheer New York

Cheer New York is one of the Founding Member Teams of the Pride Cheerleading Association, established third in chronological order after CHEER San Francisco and Cheer Los Angeles. A certified 501(c)3 nonprofit organization comprised of all-volunteer LGBTQ+ and ally cheerleaders, Cheer New York's mission is to use their athletic and philanthropic abilities to empower and affect change in our communities through charitable action.

Cheer New York has been serving the Tri-State area since 2001, inspiring and encouraging audiences wherever they perform and raising money for local LGBTQ+ charities through their New York Spirit Fund. Cheer New York’s true colors have always been shades of red and blue. A full rebrand in 2019 adapted the originals to more mature and sophisticated hues, a natural choice coupling with their mission, vision, and tagline updates. Cheer New York’s organized rebrand process - and impressive results - inspired PCA to take on our own rebrand in 2022. Shop the latest in Cheer New York and PCA logo gear, both on FSPDesigns.com. PCA Events

Gay Games 11 (Nov 3-11, 2023) will be hosted in two cities - Guadalajara and Hong Kong. Cheerleading will be in Guadalajara, overseen by PCA! Head to gggdl2023.org and smash that Registration button! (And just a tip: check your Passport’s expiration date. Thank us later.)

Who should go? Everyone who can! Ask your team leadership if someone from your team has already “Created a Team” so you don’t repeat the process and unintentionally take on administrative responsibilities. If you have specific questions about registration or participation, email events@pridecheerleading.org. Discounts on travel and accommodations are publicly available here. More information for PCA volunCHEERleaders will be coming to PCA Delegates very soon. PCA encourages every volunCHEERleader to Register! You can change most details on your registration later. Just click it now and begin the commitment.

Why go? Spread the mission of charitable cheerleading to the world! Support LGBTQ+ athletics across the globe! Build community within your team, across PCA, and with other like minded athletes internationally! Fundraise to support LGBTQ+ causes! Cheer how you cheer best, whether that is competitively, noncompetitively, or both!

What does cheerleading at Gay Games look like? Ask anyone who has ever been to a Gay Games - the Cheerleaders have always been a memorable and integral component, creating the fanfare and spirit that has now become a Gay Games Opening Ceremonies tradition since Gay Games I in 1982. Since Gay Games 8 in Cologne (2010) Cheerleading has also been a competitive sport! When you register, read closely about the categories of participation. “Exhibition Cheerleading” refers to all the things we do that aren’t competing (e.g., Opening Ceremonies, cheering at sports, Closing Ceremonies, and non-competitive routines performed by groups, whole teams, or All-PCA.) The All-PCA routine is performed at Opening Ceremonies and at our Cheerleading Competition, and at other venues throughout the week if feasible. If your PCA Team is showing up in force, your Team routines can be performed non competitively at the Cheerleading Competition (watch examples from CLA, CNY, CSF) and possibly other points throughout the week if feasible. The competition categories are Partner Stunt (Watch Playlist), Group Stunt (Watch Playlist) and Pom Dance (Watch Playlist). Any adult from anywhere can participate in the competition. In the competition, there is no preferential treatment or advantage based on PCA affiliation. PCA is updating rulebooks, scoresheets, and all competition policies and procedures to keep up with the ever-changing world of competitive cheerleading and will post them as soon as possible.
