DECEMBER NEWSLETTER

From the committee to all our members and their families, the local footy community, and our sponsors, we wish you a very merry and safe Christmas, a happy New Year, and a fantastic 2023.

INTRODUCING OUR 2023 COMMITTEE

Our new incoming committee for 2023 is as follows:

President: Cheryl Gray
Vice President: Christopher Payne
Secretary: Pieta James
Treasurer: David McMahon
Sponsorship and Marketing: Katrina Orr
Social Media: Ben Milne
General Committee: Renee Louwen-Skovdam

We welcome two new committee members in David and Renee - welcome aboard. Many thanks go to Chris and Katrina, who, while still on the committee, have stepped down from positions and taken on new positions.

Appreciation must always go to any committee members for the great job they do in working towards looking after our umpiring community.

FOND FAREWELLS

This year we say see you later to a couple of our umpires which is always bittersweet. A lot of our umpires are in the defence forces, so they often get posted in, join our group, and in a few years get posted out again. We get to know them and they become an integral part of the group but unfortunately for us, their career takes them away again. That is the vagaries of being in a defence city. But we still recognise the contribution they make to our group, and they always will be part of our group, and such we always welcome you back for a visit if you are in Townsville!

Jason McLinden started with us as a first time umpire in 2020!

He was a welcome addition to our group and joined the committee last year in 2022.

Jason is off to Canberra and we wish him well in the next step of his career.

Jason, we will miss you, but it is see you later not goodbye, make sure you drop in when you next visit Townsville.

Our next see you later is to Jim Thompson, a local legend in these parts. Jim and Vicki are moving away to be closer to family and grandkids. We are sorry to see you go, but understand why

Jim started playing footy as a junior back in 1965! Jim picked up the whistle in 1985 starting a long umpiring career. Averaging over 40 games a season, Jim has umpired in excess of 1150 games on record and probably a lot more unrecorded!

He has held numerous positions within the AFL Townsville Umpires Association and also the position of Regional Umpire Manager in 2000 and 2001.

Jim was awarded life membership to the AFLTUA in 2011, and to AFL Townsville in 2018.

Jim and Vicki, you will surely be missed, but we wish you well in your move and your next venture in life. Jim we thank you for your 37 year contribution to local footy and umpiring. It is a great legacy you have left. Make you come visit when in Townsville !!

FROM THE COMMITTEE/RUM

  • The amendments to the constitution were ratified at the AGM. The updates are being worked on and the revised version of the constitution will be uploaded to our website very soon.

  • The 2022 committee did negotiate a 3 year pay deal with AFLQ which means there will be incremental pay rises over this next 3 year period. This should bring us more into line with similar leagues within our state.

  • January - Pre-Season Training!
