Happy Holidays, from our Farmily to yours!

Farm field trips connect students with their food

When we ask our elementary students where their food comes from, the majority will respond with “the grocery store.” We encourage them to use all five of their senses to understand how their food is grown. Recently, our TK - 1st graders have been learning about the six main parts of a plant. They sharpen their skills by tasting each edible part, learning how to sew and nourish a seed, and designing their own plants from the roots up.

NOTES FROM FARMER SHANE

It rained.... a lot!

We’ve had a very wet season so far and we’re really excited about it. Some areas of the county have already had over 10 inches of rainfall. Consistent rain will go a long way to get us out of this drought and help a lot of farmers.

There are some challenges that come with the rain, however. We are farming in heavy clay that turns soupy and sticky when saturated. Boots get heavy with mud, and vehicle access becomes limited. Our main solution is to mulch walking and parking areas with wood chips.

When visiting the farm, be sure not to drive your vehicle in the mud. It could track mud onto the roads, and you might get stuck!

FACES OF CITY FARM SLO

Anya Weinstein, College Corps Fellow

Anya is a 4th year environmental management and protection major with a minor in bio. Anya’s #IndependentProject at City Farm SLO is the Prefumo Creek Restoration. Along with two other Cal Poly students participating in the College Corps Fellows Program at City Farm SLO, Tommy Melilo and Gabriel Trevino, Anya submitted a grant application to the University’s Baker-Koob Endowment for $5000 to fund a site assessment and equipment for trash and invasive species removal and planting of native vegetation. Recently, their request was granted, along with this comment: “Your project is a perfect example of Learn by Doing at its best.”

Thanks to our generous supporters and our Friends of the Farm for making our work possible.
