Moving Up, On, Along, and Out: EKISC Says "So Long and See you Later" to a Couple of Friends

EKISC gives a warm hug to our newly retired Field Operations Manager and invasive species expert, Pat Wray and a running high five to our Program Manager, Todd Larsen.

EKISC would like to officially congratulate Pat on her retirement. Pat left EKISC in late December and has been spending her time chasing powder ever since - we're finally catching up to her! Pat was a valuable asset to the invasive species world; her ferocious work ethic and attention to detail made her an integral part of the operational team. Pat was a natural at getting others on board to help the fight against invasives; her diligence greatly benefited EKISC and partners, and those of us left here at EKISC will strive to follow her stellar example. She certainly deserve her retirement!

We wish you the best in your future Pat. Retirement will surely offer you many new opportunities, which we know you will embrace wholeheartedly, just as you did at EKISC.

Todd has accepted an opportunity to work with MFLNRORD as a Range Habitat Specialist. His decision was not taken lightly, as he holds an enormous sense of loyalty and dedication to his position, the organization, the board of directors, his co- workers, and our various partners. He writes, "I sincerely appreciate the mentorship and support that I have received over the last five and a half years that I have been employed with EKISC. It has certainly been a valuable opportunity for me to learn new skills in this position, while also contributing my experience and abilities to support the growth of EKISC to where it is today."

We wish you luck in your new position Todd. You have truly passed on to the rest of the team your devotion and we thank you for that. We know you will achieve great things!

Although we are sad to see such dedicated and knowledgable friends leave EKISC we are confident that many new opportunities lay ahead in the mission to mitigate the negative impacts of invasive species in the region. Who knows, maybe we'll even see them out pulling weeds for fun in 2019!

EKISC Launches New Courses for 2019

EKISC has updated their course structure following input from some of the courses in 2017 and 2018.

The structure is simplified and divided into three levels:

1. Introductory Courses

2. Professional Courses

3. Specialized Courses

Although some prerequisites (or essential skills) are required for each course, participants can choose to join any course at any time as long as they meet the minimum pre-requisite.

CERTIFICATION: Most courses require a passing examination or assessment to receive certification. This ensures that a standard is set in continuing education and professional development.

COURSE FEES: All EKISC courses have a fee for service. As EKISC is a non-profit organization, this fee is designed to cover the cost of the course; members receive a 10.00 discount on courses. Courses taking place on college campuses do not require additional tuition or student fees.

COURSE REGISTRATION: Participants are required to pre-register online before the start of the course.

How We Can Learn From Others

Here's an interesting read about a story of the spiny water flea. The article includes ideas and information for managers about how much effort they need to invest in sampling in order to detect the species reliably and estimate whether their current efforts are effective for detecting populations early in the invasion process.
