We are asking our Studio '533 Instructors to answer a few questions about their personal journeys with Yoga and Fitness. First to share is Melissa Phillips. Melissa teaches our Monday Night Yoga Unplugged & Thursday Night Comfortably Numb classes. Every teacher started their practice as a student, and every teacher strives to remain a student. Q: What is one lesson you have learned on the mat about your physical practice? A: Over the past six months I have been rehabbing my neck due to a skiing injury. As a result, I've had to make adjustments to my own physical practice, to incorporate ease and mindfulness to prevent further injury. This has required me to be very mindful as my body moves from pose to pose. By applying Yoga philosophy such as non-attachment to my asana practice, I am able to find joy and contentment in any pose, even when it's a variation of what my peers or students may be achieving.
Q: What is one lesson you have learned on your mat that has carried over onto everyday life? A: Breathwork is my jam! I enjoy learning and sharing about pranayama and breathwork techniques. When faced with a stressful situation, or when sluggish and in need of some energy, our breath is there to guide us to the energetic state we desire. Once I began to carryover breathwork from my mat to my daily life, I was completely hooked on Yoga, and that prompted my enrollment in teacher training.
Q: What is a focus of your yoga practice currently? A: The focus of my current practice is establishing mind-muscle connection during meditation and asana practices. Whether moving or still, I am focused on channeling energy to specific muscles to encourage softening and aid the body in releasing the accumulation or samskara in that location. The intensity of my physical practice will wax and wane. Hence, I am focused on giving myself grace and finding joy in each breath, pose, and mindful moment. |

This month's Member Spotlight shines on Charlotte Marrazzo, of North Hanover. Charlotte travels a short distance to Studio ‘533 from North Hanover, where she resides with husband Shawn, and daughters Aubrey and Kiya. Their home is warmed by a new kitten named “Bowie” and their dog, Gunner. Reading, cooking, taking pictures and videos, and spending time with family fills Charlotte’s cup. She enjoys low key vibes from the comfort of home. |

Charlotte was first encouraged to practice Yoga by two of her clients from the automotive repair business she managed. During her first class, the words shared spoke to her, noting how Yoga is a selfless act, allowing one to replenish and to shine brighter for self, and others. Through Yoga, Charlotte found that connecting movement to breath and noticing her body in the moment, brought her inward: home. This gifted her the consciousness of paying attention to the mind, body, and present moment, not to attach to the past or what’s to come.
Yoga, to Charlotte, is not just asana. Yoga is pranayama, mindfulness, and meditation. It is invaluable in the techniques offered to calm when needed. When in pain, Charlotte has learned to realize that the core self is okay. Because we are not our bodies, the practice allows one to become the observer of this human experience. Charlotte’s practice is supported by her deep knowledge of Yoga, learned through her 200-hour trauma-informed teacher training program. She enjoys a vinyasa flow, and not knowing which posture may come next. Charlotte also loves how Yoga encourages one to have respect for thyself, knowing that how one shows up on the mat may vary day to day, and that is perfectly okay!
What is Charlotte currently listening to? She vibes to Pandora’s channels that feature MTV unplugged/acoustic versions of 90s/2000s alternative rock…homage to days of flannel shirts and thin eyebrows. Thank you, Charlotte, for sharing your awesome vibes with us! |
