Medallion Adventure Club

Newsletter #23 - April 28, 2023.

Greetings Fellow Adventurers

Topic 1 of 7: Debits = Credits

Debits = Credits is a fundamental concept used by financial accountants. It requires that every transaction be recorded in two ways. For example, let's say a business borrows $1,000 in cash from a bank. To record this, the accountant debits the cash account for $1,000 and credits a liability account for $1,000. This "double-entry" method provides useful information by showing the reason cash increased and is the foundation for the system of checks and balances in accounting.

But I think the concept of Debits = Credits is more general and represents reciprocity and balance in life. When one extends the hand of fellowship, he/she produces an intangible asset that echos into the future. When the act is reciprocated, balance is restored. The checks and balance protocol lives on and the balance sheet of life grows.

Topic 2 of 7: Books and Ideas

Range: Why generalists triumph in a specialized world

Zoom - Wednesday May 24th: 7:00 PM CT. Info and RSVP

Join us for a lively discussion of the ideas presented in this book. Topics on the agenda include (1) thinking outside experience, (2) the trouble with too much grit, (3) flirting with your possible selves, (4) expanding your range, and more. This book is both innovative and relevant across personal and professional domains.

It is not necessary to have read the book to participate. For those interested in a summary, we provide a video summary (video will be posted on 5/10/23).

Topic 3 of 7: Hiking / Rucking trek in Forest Park

Forest Park - Saturday May 13th: 10 AM CT Info and RSVP

Join us for a hike/ruck trek. Rucking is hiking with a weighted backpack. Many find that rucking is better that walking/hiking for gaining fitness. And, compared to jogging/running, there is a reduced risk of injury. It is a great way to get in shape for your hiking adventures this summer. You start with light weights and build up as you gain fitness. See Dr Peter Attia's discussion on the benefit of rucking.

Looking down the road (no pun intended) we plan to have a rucking event in the STL area this fall. Plans include a family picnic and all sorts of random fun. Details to come.

Topic 5 of 7: Member spotlight

Jennifer Vines

Jennifer Vives loves big ideas, including being project manager for "Before I die festival" in Indianapolis. She hopes to replicate the festival in St Louis in the future. She has an adventurous life, both professionally and personally. One special travel adventure she shared in her Member profile is: "I spent my 25th birthday (feels like a lifetime ago!) alone, hiking in Sedona. I still consider it to be one of the best birthdays I have ever had--beautiful scenery coupled with time to reflect, plus the added bonus of not having to worry about what anyone else wanted to do!"
