Protestants & Politics

News of the week at the intersection of protestants and politics.

March 12, 2020

2 new polls out this week.

1) PRRI on perceptions of immigrants

Key finding: 2/3 of white evangelicals say immigrants threaten American culture and values, and “are invading our country and replacing our cultural and ethnic background.”

2) Pew Research on evangelicals and Trump

Lots to chew on in this report. Just a few findings to note for now.

  • 15% of white evangelicals say "morally upstanding" describes Trump very well, 45% say fairly well, 37% say not too or not at all well.
  • Among black protestants, 76% say Trump is self-centered, 70% say he is prejudiced.
  • 57% of white evangelicals say God chose Trump to be president but that doesn't mean God necessarily approves of Trump's policies. Only 13% of white evangelicals said God chose Trump because God approves of Trump's policies. When asked about Obama, those numbers were 64% and 3% respectively.

3) Trump spiritual advisor Paula White is speaking at conference next month claiming to provide "supernatural protection from the coronavirus."

4) Video: Ross Douthat at Trinity Forum.

5) Brad Wilcox on the defining economic issue of our day.

6) Thabiti Anyabwile has some questions about a promoted Franklin Graham tweet.
