Adults can't learn a new language: fact or fiction?

Adults learn language to fluency nearly as well as children

The article MIT Scientists prove adults learn language to fluency nearly as well as children does a superb job of summarizing the key points from the seminal research paper A critical period for second language acquisition: Evidence from 2/3 million English speakers. Here is a quote from the article that challenges the notion that adults aren't as capable as children of learning a new language due to a decline in neuroplasticity:

“It’s highly possible that this learning difference by age is not due to some magic change in brain plasticity, but simply that adults don’t have as much time to be exposed as children and often hit a point where it stops being helpful to improve after a while. They become totally fluent at this slower pace and reaching native-level mastery provides little additional advantage. Maybe it’s not that it’s harder for older learners or that they’re not capable, maybe it’s just that they don’t have the same opportunity."

Debunking language learning myths

Learning English as an Adult: Myths, Facts, and Competencies

In this webinar, I address typical questions and debunk common myths about adult English language learning using research-based evidence. I also discuss a framework of communicative language learning and teaching across linguistic, sociolinguistic, discourse, and strategic competencies for academic, professional, and social contexts. Presentation Date: 12/6/2023 at 3:00 pm US-EST

Quote

"Anyone who stops learning is old — whether this happens at twenty or at eighty. Anyone who keeps on learning not only remains young but becomes constantly more valuable — regardless of physical capacity."

- Henry Ford
