5 Ways to Spread the Love This Valentine’s Day

February 2022 Newsletter

Happy Valentine’s Day! While Valentine’s Day is often considered a romantic holiday, it’s also a great time to share the love with the seniors in your life. Here are five ways you can celebrate the season of love with the senior in your life.

Make your own Valentines

Nothing warms the heart like a handmade Valentine. Grab some construction paper, markers, and stickers to craft your own one-of-a-kind cards. Not only will your senior love the chance to show off their creativity, but studies show that crafting boosts happiness levels and may even help protect against dementia.

Bake and share sweet treats

The fastest way to someone’s heart is through their stomach. Baking and decorating heart-shaped cookies is a great way to keep your senior engaged this Valentine’s Day. Looking for a healthier option? Homemade dark chocolate-covered strawberries are a classic Valentine’s treat that is easy for seniors to make.

Exercise for a healthy heart

Did you know that February is American Heart Month? Valentine’s Day is a great opportunity to encourage your senior loved ones to keep their hearts healthy with exercise. Attend a ballroom dance lesson with your senior, or host your own dance party with a playlist of upbeat love songs. Many local organizations also host “heart walks” you can participate in to help raise awareness for heart health.

Play a Valentine-themed game

Doing a Valentine’s Day word search or crossword puzzle with your senior loved one is a great way to spend quality time together while keeping their brain engaged. Gathering with a larger group for the holiday? Try playing a round of love-themed trivia or testing your luck in a game of Conversation Hearts bingo.

Spread the love with DIY decorations

Decorating for Valentine’s Day can liven up your senior loved one’s living space and make it feel like love really is in the air. For decorations that come from the heart, try crafting them together. You can make homemade garland using string and construction paper or craft a beautiful bouquet of paper flowers.

No matter how you decide to celebrate Valentine’s Day, don’t forget the seniors in your life. The opportunity to spend time together is sure to fill both of your hearts with joy, laughter, and love.
