James, 16th Lord Forbes, and the Sale of Druminnor Castle Druminnor Castle was first called Castle Forbes and was the seat of the Chiefs of Clan Forbes in its ancient duchus, or ancestral lands, in Aberdeenshire. The original tower was probably built before 1300. In about 1430, Alexander, 1st Lord Forbes, added a large hall block, the only part of the castle which has survived. In 1770, James, 16th Lord Forbes, was forced to put to auction the estates of Forbes, Kearn, Auchindoir and Clatt. He then arranged for their purchase by his cousins John Forbes, 8th Laird of Newe (a captain in the 42nd Highlander) and Jonathan Forbes of Brux. Before Forbes could access the funds, Newe sold the Kearn estates (with Castle Forbes now called Druminnor Castle) to John Grant of Rothmaise. Newe’s daughter Henrietta later married Grant’s son Robert Grant of Druminnor. Lord and Lady Forbes eventually used the inheritance to reclaim the other estates. However, Druminnor remained in Grant possession for six generations, until debt took them in their turn in 1955. Margaret Forbes-Sempill, a daughter of Sir John Forbes of Craigievar, 18th Lord Sempill, bought Druminnor, restoring it to Forbes ownership after a gap of 185 years.

Tolquhon Castle Cannon at National Museums Scotland No trip to the National Museums Scotland in Edinburgh is complete without admiring this cannon which once defended the House of Forbes Heritage Site Tolquhon Castle. In 1420, Sir John Forbes (c. 1390 – c. 1454), third son of Sir John Forbes “of the black lip,” married Mariota (Marjory), daughter of Sir Henry Preston (c. 1368 – c. 1433), Thane of Fermartyn. In that year, Forbes and his wife took possession of Tolquhon Castle and "Preston's Tower" was built. This cast bronze cannon is one of four identical cannons probably cast by a local founder for use in the castle. Two are on display in the National Museums Scotland in Edinburgh. They bear the arms and initials of William Forbes, 7th Lord of Tolquhon, and the date 1588.

Forbes DNA Project Looking for Participants The Clan Forbes DNA Project is now in full swing, headed by Philip Stead, MSc student of Genealogical, Palaeographic and Heraldic Studies at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland. Mr. Stead plans to conduct analysis of the Y chromosome single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with the Clan Chief, Malcolm, Lord Forbes, and compare them to the other members of the FamilyTreeDNA Forbes surname group. The success of the project depends on wide participation from individuals willing to contribute their Big Y-700 DNA data. The Society has posted the answers to many of the most frequently-asked questions.
