I recently watched the Netflix series, The Andy Warhol Diaries. It's a fascinating look at a major shift in the art world through the eyes of Warhol and those who study his life and work. Despite the diaries and his huge body of work, the show leaves the audience with a lot of questions about who Warhol was in his personal life. In the final episode, artist Glenn Ligon, argues that Warhol may have been trying to understand himself through his art. Ligon goes on to say, "In some ways, [making art] is the way we figure out who we are, rather than express who we are. The making of the work is an exploration of what we are rather than, 'I'm this and I just put it on the canvas'." His notion couldn't ring more true for me as I ponder why I spend so many hours working in my studio painting carefully arranged objects with great detail. On the surface, realistic still life painting may not seem like a profoundly expressive path to self-awareness. Yet every work is full of the visual language of symbolism and allegory that come from somewhere within me. The objects I work with often lead me in surprising directions, which makes me think the art is working on me just as much as I'm working on it. |
