MFO August 2021 Newsletter

Happy Queensland Multicultural month. On behalf of MFO Director Ms Cornelia Babbage OAM and all MFO staff, volunteers and partners, welcome to the first MFO newsletter for 2021. 

 

Multicultural Families Organisation Inc., founded in 1996, provides services for newly arrived migrants and their families, including refugees, humanitarian entrants, and new family stream migrants, during the first five years from their arrival in Australia. These services are funded by the Australian Department of Social Services (DSS). MFO is a non-government, not-for-profit organisation and registered as a Public Benevolent Institution. 

 

In 2017 MFO was granted funding from the Queensland Government to establish a Domestic and Family Violence SARA DFV Centre on the Gold Coast, to meet the increasing need of support for women and children, from a CALD background, experiencing family violence.

Multicultural Families Organisation became an NDIS registered provider in 2019 and was recently MFO approved by the NDIS commission to provide an array of new NDIS disability service including level 2 Coordination of Supports. MFO would like to welcome Sharee Hedges who is our skilled NDIS Support Coordinator. Sharee’s extensive work with the NDIS and CALD communities ensures that you receive the disabilities support you need with the exception care, respect and cultural understanding you deserve.

This year we acknowledge the role that everyone plays in contributing to Queensland’s culture and prosperity through the theme 'Inclusion in action'.

What has MFO been up to?

 

THANK YOU EVERYONE who joined the 322 kms WALK WITH REFUGEES treadmill challenge recently at MFO. Diverse cultures and ages from all over the Gold Coast walked, jogged in unity. See you in 2022.

Before Queensland was named 2032 Olympics host, MFO was on the field, future sports stars were out being active enjoying frisbee along with arts and crafts workshops over the school holidays. Did you know that MFO has a Multicultural Sewing Group? It is a great way to connect with other women and learn a new skill in a supportive environment, Monday 10am, no booking needed.

MFO had a great Domestic and Family Violence prevention training session recently with this group of proactive change-makers. If you would like to participate in our next training please email rana@mfo.org.au.

MFO is currently wrapping up our current Skilling Queenslanders For Work (SQW) program with two Certificate II courses in Logistics being finished and students entering into employment. MFO is currently applying for new SQW programs in the next funding round, so please follow MFO on Facebook and Instagram to receive updates on any upcoming employment and training programs you can engage.
