Aloha mai e nā ʻopihi o Poʻi Nā Nalu,

Like an ʻopihi, you have been clinging onto your pōhaku, even in tumultuous circumstances, and we commend you for your strength. We hope that you and your ʻohana are safe and healthy. As always, we are dedicated to supporting you through this challenging time, and will continue to do our best to keep you connected academically, professionally, and culturally as we move forward.

Here are some important updates/reminders:

  • UH extended socially distanced operations through May 31. Hulili Ke Kukui Hawaiian Center will remain closed for in-person and face-to-face activities. We will continue to provide services remotely via phone, e-mail, ZOOM, STAR Balance Advising, and MySuccess.
  • Participate in our do-at-home activities! You are still expected to fulfill your Poʻi Nā Nalu two-event requirement if you have not already. While we cannot take you on huakaʻi or hold workshops at this time, we have sent you numerous virtual activities pertaining to cultural development, career exploration, and financial literacy that can be done at home through which you can receive participation credit. The activities can also be accessed below. Have fun and share them with your ʻohana!
  • Graduation Check-Out Meeting: Are you graduating this spring or summer? Please meet with us! As your journey here at Honolulu CC comes to an end, we would like to have a quick "Graduation Check-out" meeting with you to discuss your future plans, obtain contact information and make sure you are on your path to success. Click here to schedule this quick meeting with Greg or Noʻi over ZOOM. If you absolutely cannot ZOOM, we can talk over the phone as well.
  • Are you attending Summer School this summer? If you are, please contact Greg at gkashigi@hawaii.edu ASAP with the following info:

    2. Session 1 or 2
    3. Campus
    4. Are you already registered?

  • Engage with us on Instagram! If you don't already, follow us at @poinanalu_nhctep and Hulili Ke Kukui Hawaiian Center at @hulilikekukui. We are leveling up our IG engagement and have been posting fun activities you can engage in.

E ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi Kākou

Let's Speak Hawaiian

Our Huaʻōlelo o ka Mahina series features a new Hawaiian word each month. We hope that you will utilize these terms in your everyday conversations by simply plugging them into your sentences. Before you know it, they will become a natural part of your vocabulary!

HOʻOIKAIKA

Definition: “To make a great effort, work hard, encourage, animate, strengthen, fortify, try, strive, strain...”

Ikaika - Strong, powerful, sturdy; strength, force, energy...

Hoʻoikaika kino - body-building exercise

(Pukui & Elbert, “Hawaiian Dictionary”)

Usage example: "I do my best to hoʻoikaika my ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi by speaking it every day."

("I do my best to strengthen my ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi by speaking it every day.")

Review of previous words:

  • Ola - life, health, well-being
  • Pōmaikaʻi - blessing, prosperity, good fortune
  • Haʻawina - lesson, assignment, task
  • Kākoʻo - to support, uphold, assist
  • Noke - to persist, continue, repeat, persevere
  • Kuleana - responsibility, right, privilege

Poʻi Nā Nalu's ʻŌlelo Noʻeau

Piʻi ka nalu, hokua ka nalu, poʻi ka nalu, a pae.

The wave rises, the wave crests, the wave breaks, then one reaches the shore.

This ʻōlelo was written especially for Poʻi Nā Nalu Native Hawaiian Career & Technical Education Program. While its underlying meaning can be interpreted in a number of ways, we highlight it here to illustrate the way Poʻi Nā Nalu participants embark on their individual academic journeys.

Piʻi ka nalu - Just as a wave rises, we accumulate knowledge, skills, and experiences that serve as a foundation for our future endeavors.

Hokua ka nalu - Just as a wave crests, we as individuals and as a whole reach high points in our educational journey—we understand our purpose, we create meaningful relationships, and we achieve goals that propel us forward.

Poʻi ka nalu, a pae - Just as a wave breaks, we use all that we have garnered in our experiences to move forward into the next steps of our lives. Examples of this are graduation, transferring to a four-year college, and landing a dream job. As we arrive ashore, we continue on our paths to pursue next steps and new goals to improve our lives and that of others.

May this modern-day ʻōlelo noʻeau serve as a guide, a reminder, and an inspiration as you strive to be the best scholar you can be for yourself, your family, your community, and the lāhui.

KILOHANA

Student of the Month

Tanya Kapuy

Welina mai kākou e kuʻu lāhui,

I hope that everyone is doing maikaʻi, staying safe and sane during our century’s pandemic. I want to thank Poʻi Nā Nalu for honoring me with the Kilohana Student of the Month. The journey that led me here took longer than anticipated, but I'm finally here. I'm from Kauaʻi and Honolulu, a single parent mom of three boys ages 17, 16 and 7 years old living in the ahupuaʻa of Waikīkī. That journey I just mentioned was a whole new restart from a nightmare that happened on Kauaʻi. But, weʻre happy now and my sons have flourished here. In fact, my two oldest sons will be coming here for the FIRE program after high school.

I started my education career majoring in the wonderful Human Services program at HonCC, but I decided that I want to go further to UH Mānoa to obtain my Bachelor’s in Human Development and Family Studies, so I am in the Lib. Arts program getting my gen ed. The main reason I am pursuing a career in social services is to help families, especially in our native Hawaiian community. I went through many rough times and many social workers who advocated and helped me to a path of a better future. That's where I see myself in 10 years, contributing to the betterment of our community one family at a time.

I am so grateful that I found Poʻi Nā Nalu! I've been able to take advantage of their services. Every huakaʻi I went to has been so interesting and culturally educating. I’m also a shy person and with the help of PNN I am able to connect with people that are willing to help me educationally and/or professionally. That's pretty maikaʻi! No laila, take care everyone!

Me ke aloha,

Tanya Kapuy
