2014- Students helped us create our education gardens from bare fields

Today - students learn regenerative farming techniques in our robust market garden

9 Years of Farm Class with Pacific Beach High School

Since 2014, City Farm SLO has partnered with Pacific Beach High School (PBHS) to offer our twice-weekly Farm Class. Students learn to grow and tend to crops, harvest and cook wholesome foods, and understand the importance of sustainable agriculture. Over the last 9 years, PBHS students have helped transform City Farm SLO's gardens into the productive farm we have today!

In a recent pre-course survey, over 40% of students responded that what they are most excited for Farm Class is … “learning to grow food and having the opportunity to be outside.” Our team is thrilled to provide students with hands-on technical instruction outside of a classroom.

Farm Class is sponsored by SLCUSD, the County of SLO, the Janssen Foundation, and our Friends of the Farm.

FARM HAPPENINGS

City Farm SLO receives DE&I Grant from the City of SLO: This funding will allow us to continue making accessibility improvements on the farm including ADA pathways, site-wide signage, and the completion of our Garden for All. Thank you, City of SLO, for helping us make farm-based education accessible to all! Pictured to the right is a drawing of our universally accessible garden.

NOTES FROM FARMER SHANE

Raspberries: Winter Update

During the winter, we prune our dormant perennial plants before they pop back to life as the weather warms for spring. Amongst the plants that needed pruning were our two rows of raspberries. First we thinned the plants leaving only the largest, healthiest canes. Then we tied each cane to a guidewire and pruned it 36” high. Then we top-dressed the soil with a small amount of feather meal and about an inch of compost. We invested some time getting this all done well, but we won’t need to do much additional maintenance throughout the rest of the season. The existing canes will develop fruit, and the plants will send up new canes from the ground. This will be the 3rd full growing season for these plants, so they’re close to fully mature and they should produce lots of tasty fruit this year. We haven’t grown enough to sell them in previous years (we just let students pick them as snacks), but this year we may have enough to make selling them worthwhile. Stay tuned on our Harveslty page to see if they go up for sale!
