In the News: United Black Birth Collective, a 2022 Collective 365 grant recipient Tommaya Davis survived giving birth to her daughter in a Winston-Salem, North Carolina, hospital eight years ago — barely. “After [my daughter Nadia] was born, a doctor came [into my room] as calm as day and said, ‘You’re one of the lucky ones. Your iron was so low, you were supposed to die.’ ” When Davis became pregnant with her second child, she was happy to learn about the United Black Birth Collective (UBBC), a Richmond-based organization of midwives, doulas and other birth workers who are dedicated to bringing Black babies into the world safely and with fully involved families. |

| | The Safe Sister's Circle The Safe Sisters Circle (TSSC) is a Black women founded organization that provides free culturally specific services to Black women survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse primarily living in Washington DC’s Wards 7 and 8- where the highest rate of domestic and sexual abuse is found in the city. TSSC was founded on the belief that there was a cultural disconnect between the majority white service providers within the sector and the majority Black women they served. | | |
