Hi Renee,

If you’ve been keeping up with the news, you know there has been a tragic string of vulnerable road user fatalities in the city of Chicago during the past two weeks. Our community has lost three children and two elderly men since June 2. The most recent fatality happened just this Thursday, June 16, when 11 year old Ja'lon James was fatally struck in a hit and run in close proximity to a school. Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of Rafi Cardenas, Lily Shambrook, Peter Paquette, Wilberto Rivera, and Ja'lon James.

We are grateful to the hundreds of you who joined Better Streets Chicago and Chicago Family Biking on July 12 for a rally demanding safe streets for all. While this has been a particularly difficult month, your energy and voice is giving us hope that, together, we can make the change we deserve a reality.

The work you see Better Streets Chicago doing — and the behind-the-scenes work you don’t see happening — is being conducted by a team of five individuals on a volunteer basis. To say the least, it’s a lot.

With that in mind, we want to take some time to strategize new campaigns and in-person opportunities to best help keep up the momentum in our movements for zero cyclist and pedestrian fatalities in Chicago, improved public transportation, and so much more in the realm of sustainable transportation and creating more space for people.

In order to do that, we unfortunately must cancel our previously announced general meeting which was scheduled for this upcoming Tuesday. We look forward to providing more tangible ways for you to support our work. We will announce a new date on our website, via email, and on our social media channels.

How you can make a difference now

Attend a community memorial to honor the life of Rafi Cardenas, the 2 year old toddler who was killed while riding his scooter within a crosswalk.

His family, community members, and safe streets advocates will be gathering in the 4600 block of North Leavitt Street on Wednesday, June 22nd, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Email your officials and demand safe streets for all

We’ve partnered with Active Transportation Alliance and Chicago Family Biking to create a quick and easy way to email your alderperson, the mayor and leaders at CDOT to ensure we prioritize traffic safety and take bold steps to protect our city’s most valuable asset – our people. Click here to email your officials.

Submit your feedback for the Clark St. Crossroads project

While many of the feedback opportunities are now closed, you can still share your input on what improvements you’d like to see on Clark St. between Foster and Montrose. The interactive map and contact form (at the very bottom of the page) are still open. Submit your feedback here.
