Hi Renee,
If you’ve been keeping up with the news, you know there has been a tragic string of vulnerable road user fatalities in the city of Chicago during the past two weeks. Our community has lost three children and two elderly men since June 2. The most recent fatality happened just this Thursday, June 16, when 11 year old Ja'lon James was fatally struck in a hit and run in close proximity to a school. Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of Rafi Cardenas, Lily Shambrook, Peter Paquette, Wilberto Rivera, and Ja'lon James.
We are grateful to the hundreds of you who joined Better Streets Chicago and Chicago Family Biking on July 12 for a rally demanding safe streets for all. While this has been a particularly difficult month, your energy and voice is giving us hope that, together, we can make the change we deserve a reality.
The work you see Better Streets Chicago doing — and the behind-the-scenes work you don’t see happening — is being conducted by a team of five individuals on a volunteer basis. To say the least, it’s a lot.
With that in mind, we want to take some time to strategize new campaigns and in-person opportunities to best help keep up the momentum in our movements for zero cyclist and pedestrian fatalities in Chicago, improved public transportation, and so much more in the realm of sustainable transportation and creating more space for people.
In order to do that, we unfortunately must cancel our previously announced general meeting which was scheduled for this upcoming Tuesday. We look forward to providing more tangible ways for you to support our work. We will announce a new date on our website, via email, and on our social media channels.
