Scribbles by Shirley November is usually my least favourite month- dull, dreary and cloudy. NOT this year, we had lovely bright, light white snow! From kayaking to skiing in just a few days. Our community is so active that a person could be out every day and night. Craft Sales, Book Launches, Movies, Ladies Nights, Concerts and great Christmas shopping. Football for the Grands is now over, with the end of frozen toes as well. Now there is excitement building for downhill skiing at Mount Pakenham. On November 12 Pamela, Grant and boys opened Cedar Hill Christmas Tree Farm for their third season. There's no better way to get excited for Christmas than being surrounded by beautiful handmade wreaths, delicious homemade treats, and gorgeous ornaments and décor for all. Outdoors your perfect Christmas tree is decorated by lovely festive snow. Take the tractor-drawn sleigh and cut your own or select a pre-cut tree; there are so many to choose from! It is very distracting at Fulton's as we are also busy Christmas elves, preparing for corporate, family and wholesale orders. It's hard to stay focused when 5 minutes down the road there is a Christmas gem that draws one in! Come visit- you will most likely find a combo of family members that will confuse you as to which farm you are visiting (Fulton's vs the Cedar Hill Christmas Tree Farm). "Celebrate the joy of Christmas with two branches of our family tree." Sweet maple wishes to you, Shirley Fulton-Deugo 4th Generation Owner |

Looking Back With the November snow my mind raced ahead to winter and back to a special sleigh. Most of you know that my Uncle Johnny had polio as a boy and was left with paralysis of his legs and one arm. He lived with us in the farmhouse and 'motored' around the house in a self-propelled wheelchair. Outside he had many modes of transportation, a horse-drawn cart and later, tractors of various sizes and uses. But my favourite was Uncle Johnny's big hand sleigh. |

Luckily it has been preserved and you can see it in the Pancake House the next time you visit Fulton's. This sleigh is unlike the modern, light, speedy sleds. It is sturdy, hand-crafted of durable lumber from the farm with broad metal runners forged at the farm. Now Uncle Johnny was a substantial man, weighing in well over 200 pounds, so this rugged sleigh also needed a mighty handle as a rope would not be adequate. This special (mostly) Sunday sleigh was stored in a shed to preserve the wood. A great treat for Uncle Johnny was to get up close and personal to the lovely layer of snow; this sleigh provided those opportunities. |

One Sunday my older brother John and I (we were about 6 and 12) decided to take Uncle Johnny for a sleigh ride. Mom and Dad had gone for the weekly Sunday drive and we three had opted out. It was a beautiful crisp winter day with a clear blue sky, a perfect day for an adventure. Uncle Johnny was always a willing participant in mischievous capers and adventures so we started the preparations: - the long strong smooth oak plank; - foam pad and blanket to sit in; - heavy coats and boots and wool socks hand knit by Uncle Johnny; and, - mitts, hats and scarves. I have no idea how long this took but finally we placed the sleigh and plank in just the right way for Uncle Johnny to be able to 'skitch' his bum along the plank to reach his awaiting chariot (sleigh). Excitement was building, with lots of laughter and great plans for the afternoon. So off we went down the lane with plans to explore the sugarbush. When you go down the lane you must also go up. But for two smallish kids pulling a hefty uncle on a sturdy sleigh up an incline, it was too much. Now what to do? We were stuck between two 'hills' on the laneway. The only way to get Uncle Johnny back to the warmth of the woodfire was to wait until Mom and Dad got home. Uncle Johnny, always a positive soul, immediately decided how to make a new adventure. We were sent into the house to make real hot chocolate (cocoa, maple syrup and milk) and bring an assortment of my Mom's yummy baked treats. Also, more blankets and pillows to make our winter picnic a success. The afternoon was filled with great stories and laughter. Almost too soon (even though the cold was starting to seep into our boots and mitts) Mom and Dad drove into the laneway. I can only imagine their reaction.... not again, what are the kids (all three) up to today?! Dad rescued Uncle Johnny and returned him to his wheelchair beside the woodstove, a simple task for my Dad. But oh dear, my poor Mom found a kitchen and house in general disarray, with dirty measuring cups, spoons, pots, mugs and milk on the counter, wet and dirty dishcloths and towels, cookie tins open, cake leftovers uncovered, sticky maple syrup dripped on counters and floors, cupboard doors askew, drawers open, and quilts tossed here and there. Adventures mean different things to adults and children! |

2nd Annual Ladies Night a Huge Success! We think all would agree that it was a fabulous evening at Cedar Hill Christmas Tree Farm. The first 50 ladies were lucky recipients of Swag Bags filled with goodies from suppliers and local businesses. We had awesome door prizes. A school bus was parked and running so that early arrivals could keep warm on board until the Tree Farm doors opened at 6:30pm. We had hot chocolate set up and available outdoors. It was a chilly evening! |

This recipe for Maple Cajun Cheese Ball, using Fulton's Cajun Spice (available online or in the Maple Shoppe) is perfect for your event. It only takes 10 minutes to prepare and makes one large cheese ball. You can roll it in nuts to make it look fancy. Serve on a platter with crackers or fresh baguette slices. |
