POSTURE CHALLENGE - #2

Proper Sitting Posture

So, how did those photos come out? Do you have a bit of work to do on your posture?

Remember good posture begins with good spinal alignment, so if you realise you have some work to do on your posture and you are going to take up the challenge, it's a good idea to start with an adjustment.

Posture tip #2 - Sit taller

Ever heard this before, or said it yourself if you are a parent, - “sit up straight.” These days our tech life habits are making many of us hunch over and look older far before our time.

Smart posture habits can make a surprisingly big difference in mind and body. Improving your body alignment can energize you, as well as improve alertness and self-esteem.

So for tip # 2 follow these steps:

Step 1: Ask a colleague or friend to help you really take a look at your posture when you’re sitting engrossed at your computer.  Have your buddy sneak 3 candid pictures of you during the day when you’re working.

Step 2: Time for the slouchy truth. At the end of the day look at the pictures.

  • Is your head in line with your hips, or is it jutting forward like a turtle?

  • Are your shoulders relaxed, or hunched up and rolled forward?

Step 3: Hatch a plan to create a new habit of sitting tall. Put a post-it note on top of your monitor that says Sit Up Straight! Every time you see the note, check yourself and correct your posture.

Exercise for the week - Child's Pose

  1. Start on your hands and knees, with your knees as far as shoulders-width apart and big toes touching each other.

  2. Crawl forward on your hands and extend your arms straight out toward the front of the mat.

  3. Slowly start to drop your hips back to rest on your heels.

  4. Rest your forehead on the floor.

  5. Breathe here for 5–10 deep breaths.
