Athlete Interview

We caught up with Matthew Gentry, a senior indoor volleyball player at Lincoln Memorial University in Tennessee to ask him about his faith and athletic career. Gentry has been elected to the Collegiate Beach National Team twice, and traveled to Thailand to represent the United States on the U21 National Team in 2021. Here's what he had to say!

Q: What has been the biggest challenge and reward during your volleyball career?

A: "The biggest challenge has been staying out of my own way. It can be hard for me to find the time to do the things I need in order to succeed. These being things like homework, sleeping, eating right, and so on. I've been getting better at it, and I'm able to work hard in practice, watching film, and preparing mentally. If I can eliminate the little distractions, when it comes to game time I'll be fully focused.

The most rewarding thing is the friendships I've made. Whether through indoor or beach volleyball, I have friends all over the country that I can call on the phone and ask if they can pick me up from the airport, for example. It's so rewarding to be recognized at this high level, and get to know these people and have amazing relationships with them. People not only around the country, but the whole world."

Q: How do you feel that God has been able to help you through your challenges?

A: "I think that God has helped me to recognize these challenges in general. For the past few years, I didn't realize that the things I'm struggling with were problems. But I was reading scripture and realized that with whatever I do, I need to be doing it to the best of my ability in order to glorify God. 1 Corinthians 10:31 says "so whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." So I've been learning to be consistent with what I say, and then what I do."

Q: What spiritual advice would you give to a freshman athlete who is trying to find their way in college?

A: "Stand firm in your beliefs. It's gonna be really hard, and you’ll be tempted. But what God has waiting for you at the gates of Heaven is worth so much more than giving into the everyday temptations. What He has in store for you is so much greater. Don’t fall into the peer pressure and temptations. College has presented so much of that to me and it can be a struggle, so that would be my advice."

Gentry and his LMU squad kick off their season on January 4th, as they take on Pepperdine University in Malibu, California.

Weekly Devotional

“Then Job replied to the Lord: “I know that you can do anything, and no one can stop you. You asked, ‘Who is this that questions my wisdom with such ignorance?’ It is I—and I was talking about things I knew nothing about, things far too wonderful for me.” (Job 42:1-3)

Nothing, not even our own ignorance and foolishness can prevent what the Lord has planned. His knowledge is far beyond our questioning. His ways surpass our comprehension. His divine law will always triumph our earthly perspective of things, no matter how wise we think we are. So the next time you are questioning God’s plans in your life or in the world, understand that when He made His promise to us that everything is being used for the good of those who love Him, (Rom. 8:28) it was no mistake. God takes defeats and turns them into victories. God has never broken His promises because He is the source of truth.

Reflection:

  1. Do I trust that God is working for my good, even if I can't see it?

  2. When was a time in my life where God took a bad situation and turned it into something positive?

  3. Do I ever tend to act like Job and question God's wisdom?
