MAY 2022

Rally! Season 2, Issue 2

It’s Season 2, Issue 2, in May 2022! An auspicious sign that #PCAPrideTour 2022 will be 2 2 2 good to us!

May Reflections

In the month since our last issue, we've experienced a roller coaster for diversity, equity, and inclusion. Our spirits soared for Lesbian Visibility Week (April 25 - May 1), but we clutched each other close when we reacted to the draft majority opinion of Roe v. Wade, leaked on May 3. We celebrated along with over 130 countries on May 17th for International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (#IDAHOBIT), but then we screamed and flexed our advocacy muscles when we saw new laws criminalizing gender transition surgery and further threatening trans lives. We've reflected on the year of progress for the AAPI and QTAPI communities, and the future of visibility and community coalition-building that we can leverage from our position as Charitable Cheerleaders. But now we mourn with families across the country after the tragedies in Buffalo, NY and Uvalde, TX.

It's important that we remain strong, tenacious, and courageous, and continue to do important work as Charitable Cheerleaders for every community. We’ll ride this roller coaster together as a family, and continue to CHEER FOR BETTER!

True Colors by CHEER Salt Lake

This month we spotlight Cheer Salt Lake (CSL)! Est. 2011, CSL is the only adult, charitable cheerleading team in Salt Lake City, UT. In their “True Colors” video, CSL’s founder, Valina, tells the story of her team’s surprisingly coincidental (or was it?) choice of colors! CSL’s beneficiary this year, Genderbands, is also purple and black! Genderbands provides fiinancial assistance, free products and services, education, and peer support for transgender people. CSL and its 20+ volunteers are so proud to support Genderbands this year. Text CSL to 44-321 to donate.

PCA News

In this PCA News moment, we put some of our Official Partners up on the pedestal:

Gay Games

PCA is a proud supporter of the Gay Games (@gaygames), which is celebrating its 40th Anniversary with commemorative pins!

The design features logos from all 11 of the Gay Games, cleverly arranged in the shape of the FGG logo. Net proceeds from pin sales will be used to further the global mission of the Federation of Gay Games, in the spirit of founder Dr. Tom Waddell.

Kindred Pride

The KindRED Pride Foundation @kindredpride has a mission to honor the kindred spirit, bravery, and courage of the LGBTQ+ community, to celebrate our differences as well as our "oneness," and to support like-minded endeavors. PCA is proud to be a kindred spirit and partner with this organization.

Give 3 CHEERS for KindREDPride for these 3 ways they are uplifting this community during the first weekend of June 2022:

  1. Diversity In Sports Summit - Thursday, June 2: Pro & collegiate LGBTQ+ athletes tell their stories with an emphasis on how we can make it easier for today’s LGBTQ+ youth.
  2. Red Shirt Pride Day #RSPD - Saturday, June 4: Kindred spirits around the world wear 🔻RED🔻 in solidarity for diversity, equality, inclusion, safe expression, and kindness! RED Shirt Pride Day! #TakeTheRedShirtChallenge!
  3. The Pride Cup - June 3-5, 2022: BE A KIND CHAMPION at the First Annual Pride Cup! A multi-sport LGBTQ+ tournament where all can #playwithpride! Sports include Beach Volleyball, Golf, Pickleball and MORE!

Special Olympics Cheer

On May 17, PCA partnered with the Special Olympics and taught a Zoom Special Olympics Cheer Clinic! Competitive Cheer became a Recognized Sport of the Special Olympics in March 2019 and offers competition for both Special Olympics Traditional and Unified teams. At the 2022 ICU World Cheerleading Championships, the USA National Special Abilities teams competing in Unified & Traditional Cheer and Unified & Traditional Pom ALL brought home Gold medals!

It was an honor and an absolute delight to Zoom with Special Olympians and coaches, to share PCA curriculum with them, and hear them cheer the letters “P-C-A” with us! They are now part of the family - forever! Special Olympics Cheer — Lifting Spirits Worldwide!

Compete Network

Compete Sports Diversity (@competesportsdiversity) is, again, calling for video submissions answering the question: “What does #SportsDiversity mean to you?” Watch PCA’s and learn what it means to us! You can record a video, too! Help promote LGBTQ+ diversity, equity, and inclusion in sport! Email david.smith@competediversity.com.

Bonfire🔥

PCA announces a new partnership with Bonfire, a 100% free fundraising platform that helps communities raise money for causes they're passionate about with the sale of custom apparel. Bonfire can handle everything from design work to printing and shipping. Their team fosters personal connection immediately, and we are so pleased to be working with a company that, and a person who, before anything else, thanked PCA for the work we do to celebrate the queer community in cheerleading.
