Hello Changemaker 👋

Thank you for reading the Reyet Up, we appreciate all the continued support!

The continued back-to-back hate crimes and the mass shootings in recent weeks have returned the spotlight to the 2nd amendment and the roles of gun ownership in our society. It's of particular note that the city of Boulder, CO had banned assault rifles, the same type used in this shooting, only to have the NRA fight them in court and successfully have the ban overturned on a federal level. You can get educated on state-specific 2nd amendment rights in the Reyets app, and decided if they strike the balance between personal freedom and public good?

Until next week stay safe, stay just.

Reyets Cheif Justice Officer, Justin Moore to testify on Geroge Floyd Act.

Last summer, the Austin Justice Coalition asked the Austin community to stand up for Black Lives, and the community overwhelmingly responded.

This Thursday, they're asking the community once more to stand for Black Lives. This Thursday, the Texas version of the George Floyd Act will be heard in the Homeland Security Committee and we need as many voices as possible to testify before this committee in support of this bill. This bill would take the necessary strides in making sure police are held accountable when they break community trust and unnecessarily take lives.

Reyets own, Justin Moore (Civil Rights Attorney), will be at the Texas Capitol testifying on our behalf and we hope you will join him if you live in the Austin area.

If you can not make it to the rally, please submit written comments in support of HB 88 (the George Floyd Act) and HB 830 (a bill enacting provisions of the George Floyd Act that end arrest for fine-only violations).

  1. This link takes you to a form set up FOR THIS HEARING by the Homeland Security and Public Safety Committee.
  2. You must select the bills for which you will submit comments, and then submit comments for each bill one at a time.
  3. There is a 3000 character limit for your comment, which is roughly 300 words.
  4. You might want to write your comments in a separate document so you can check your character count.
  5. Be sure your comment includes your SUPPORT for these bills, and a request that the lawmakers vote FOR them.

Meet long time fighter for youth and women's rights: Melanie Campbell

Melanie Campbell has worked for youth and women's rights for more than two decades and was recognized as one of Washington D.C.'s Top 40 Under 40 Emerging Leaders in 2000. Campbell has helped create a youth-focused leadership development program, called Black Youth Vote! which works to engage and train a new generation of civic leaders and political activists.

Campbell also played a key role in the 2012 election, when the 66.2% of eligible black voters who participated in the election surpassed white, Hispanic, and Asian voting rates for the first time in history. Campbell also runs the Black Women's Roundtable, which advocates for policies to advance women, including appointing them to high-level positions in government.
