Raleigh, North Carolina — mano-Y-ola is pleased to announce the fifth annual Hispanic Farmers and Agricultural Professionals Symposium on October 12, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. – 12:20 p.m. EST. This Symposium will be held virtually via Zoom and include live simultaneous interpretation from Full Circle Interpreting in English and Spanish. The virtual event will be followed by an in-person field demonstration on October 13th in Puerto Rico’s western region, with a hands-on application of Symposium content led by field experts Edwin Más and Heriberto Martínez-Méndez.
This year’s Symposium will include addresses from key sector professionals, including Louis Aspey, the Associate Chief of the U.S. Department of Agriculture – Natural Resources Conservation Service (USDA-NRCS) and Gloria Montaño-Greene, Deputy Under Secretary for Farm Production and Conservation – USDA, with the keynote address on Ecology Systems and Future Implications by Dr. Ariel Lugo, the Director of the International Institute of Tropical Forestry (IITF) for the U.S. Forest Service. Sessions in this year’s Symposium will include a data presentation on “Agriculture and Forestry Indicators” by mano-Y-ola team members, a panel on “Land and Legacy: Charting the Path of Sustainable Agriculture and Forestry,” and a panel on “Hispanic Climate-Smart Programs.”
This year’s Symposium will focus on the timely theme, Sustaining the Future: Ecology, Innovation, and Partnership in Hispanic Agriculture and Forestry, a topic mano-Y-ola is uniquely positioned to spearhead due to its extensive experience and longstanding commitment to advancing these fields. Past Symposium topics have included Climate-Smart Agriculture and Equity (2022), Diversity in Agricultural Outreach (2021), The Impact of COVID-19 on Agriculture (2020), and The Presence and Contribution of Hispanic Farmers Across the Southeast Region (2019).
