About Us

Founded in 2021, New England Young Fishermen’s Alliance (NEYFA) has been a conceptual work in progress since 2017, catalyzed in 2019 when NH Community Seafood, NH Food Alliance, and NH Sea Grant held three “focus groups” called Dock Talks: Next Generation around the NH Seacoast, including commercial fishermen from a variety of fisheries from southern Maine, NH, and northern Massachusetts. Based on the responses from those focus groups and countless conversations with young commercial fishermen, NEYFA formed a 3-year grant funded by the USDA, FMPP grant program in cooperation with Yankee Fishermen’s Cooperative, the administrator of the grant.

Our Mission

Our mission is to empower the next generation in our local commercial fishing industry by providing critical networking, training, and resources.

Through values-based initiatives, we plan to preserve, protect, and promote the future of our small boat fishing businesses in northern New England.

Our Deckhand to Captain Training Program

The Deckhand to Captain Training Program is designed to assist experienced and committed commercial fishermen and women in developing their own business plans and marketing strategy in order to be successful in entering the commercial fishing industry as an Owner-Operator of your own business. Additional training will include industry and regulatory advisement from state and federal regulators,  collaborative marketing and branding, getting involved in the regulatory process, public speaking, and sales advisement.

Classroom and meeting attendance will consist of 19- 2 hour sessions. Safety training requirements will take two consecutive days in the summer and/or fall months. Collaborative Research and/or advocacy will be required for a total of 15 hours of participation and will be on your own time.

One-on-one time with Business Advisor Diane Lewis will be utilized as needed to develop your business plan. You are eligible to receive business management services for a total of two years calendar years, from the time you begin your training.

Advocacy Updates

NEFMC Meeting

Lucas Raymond and Andrea went to the New England Fisheries Management Council (NEFMC) meeting in Freeport on Tuesday, June 27th. The NEFMC is one of 8 regional fisheries management councils in the US, and they are mandated to promote the development of a domestic fleet AND link fishing communities more directly to the management process.

New Hampshire Business Day Luncheon

Intending to connect businesses and industries with policymakers, Senator Jeanne Sheehan hosted the 11th annual New Hampshire Business Day Luncheon this week at Capitol Hill. Our wonderful Andrea Tomlinson and Jeff Riccio were invited to attend and represent NEYFA with concerns and questions on how the government can support young professionals in the fishing industry.

An Update from our Intern

Bella Dziak has been working on keeping our followers engaged and informed daily by posting on Instagram and Facebook. She has also been working on a video project called, Dock Talks: Next Gen, documenting fishermen and women working in the seacoast and sharing their work day while answering important questions about small-boat commercial fishing to change the stigma around the industry.

What's New with Us?

We have developed a partnership with the National Future Fishermen's Coalition! We've been invited to join as founding partners to help support the young generation of small-boat commercial fishermen and women on a national scale. This is an incredible development that we're excited to share more about soon.

With our other partners, CFCRI/URI  and the Fishing Partnership, we are working on developing an Apprentice/Greenhorn program for entry-level fishermen in s. Maine, NH, and n. Mass. This program will teach deckhands and sternmen all they need to know about working on a local fishing vessel.

Upcoming Events

Meet with the BOEM team in Portsmouth, NH, to express the NH fishing industry's concern on the offshore wind energy project in the Gulf of Maine.
