Tomorrow marks the first anniversary of my training at Empower Lift, a boutique-style gym in North Miami! With today's letter, I wish to tell you how I have transformed myself into another person within the past year.

As a result of being quarantined at home during COVID-19, I gained 15 pounds last year. Regardless of how little I care about body shape, I felt bad when receiving my blood test results. My health was generally poor at my age of early 30s. Having researched the most effective way to lose weight, I visited Empower Lift and signed up for 20 powerlifting classes on 10/02/2020.

Back then, I was weak in the bench press. I didn't know how to deadlift correctly. I can barely squat heavyweight, even though I had some experience. However, I knew that I had to be patient and build my progress step by step. I trained only once a week and rested properly. After noticed an increase in strength in January, I decided to add Olympic weightlifting into my training routine. Since then, I have trained twice a week, and I barely miss any classes.

Two weeks ago, I had another blood test, and I was very pleased with the results. Even my doctor was surprised.

In addition, my weight dropped 20 pounds and my body fat went down from 21.5% to 15.5%. Although my workout levels are not comparable to those of bodybuilders, I do seem to look more "cut" now. The most important change was an increase in energy and a more positive attitude. I have to admit, that is probably one of the reasons why I am able to teach 5 classes while pursuing my Ph.D.

"One year ago Frank Shu inquired about trying out our Powerlifting Classes. Frank practiced martial arts and it was suggested for him to utilize powerlifting to strengthen his combat. After a few weeks, we invited Frank to try Olympic Weightlifting to help improve his mobility. One class and he was hooked. Over the past year, I have never had the pleasure to coach someone that is able to apply corrections most immediately. Not only has his strength improved but his entire body has morphed into a lean strong physique. We are very grateful to have Frank as such a prominent Part of Empower Lifts family. Happy One Year!"

Owner & Coach, Empower Lift

You may be curious how I transformed myself in just one year. Here I am going to share my secrets.

1. Be Goal-oriented

It is my goal to be healthy. To achieve this, I mainly trained powerlifting and Olympic weightlifting. I understand that gaining muscle is just a bonus. Therefore, I never focused on building muscles.

2. Be Patient

We live in a social media era. It is wonderful to see people who have nice and can lift heavy weights. However, I am patient. It is hard for me to compare with those celebrities and even my fellow gym members. I only pay attention to my own progress.

3. Be Smart

Be smart. My body condition and priorities in my life led me not to join the unlimited training program or train more than twice a week. Two times a week I trained, and five days were for rest. In my opinion, this is a smart strategy that works well for me.

4. Be Humble

Please be humble no matter how smart you are. I always follow my coach's advice, though I often have my own ideas. When people criticize my form or technique, I accept it. Being humble gives me the opportunity to listen to different perspectives and voices, which leads to progress.

5. Be Consistent

Did I tell you that I barely missed any classes? Be consistent is important. I maintained the twice-a-week training routine for more than 10 months without ever giving up.

It is hard to imagine a quality life without these positive characteristics. In fact, the five secrets above may be applied to almost everything in life. Don't you agree?

Yours sincerely,

Fang
