NEWS FROM                MR. SESSIONS...

Dear Academy Families,

There has been a change of seasons since our last Caller - the leaves are down, our heat is on, jackets and snowpants, hats and mittens dot our playground and woods.  While this Fall is far from normal, it is comforting to know that we are progressing through it as a community of students, educators and caregivers.

Last week we had a chance to celebrate Halloween as a school, as both hybrid and remote learners were able to design pumpkins, tour the displays and dance together on the playground.  I can’t tell you how nice it felt to welcome some of our remote learners back to campus for a period of time.

As we move ahead into the darker months of the year, Kelly and I continue to be incredibly impressed and grateful for our school community.  Our remote learners are deeply engaged in their educational programs and persevering through the challenges associated with distance learning.  Our hybrid learners are displaying such kindness and dedication to our community on a daily basis, and our teachers are learning whole new ways to teach - online and outside - and their work has been incredible.  As I write this our classes are outside reading around firepits, building structures in the woods, and learning together in safe, clean classrooms.

Today and Monday are half days to accommodate parent-teacher conferences.  We hope that you are all able to schedule a time to connect with your child’s teacher during this time and learn about the things they are doing in school.

In terms of the upcoming holiday, we would like to ask you to adhere to the travel guidelines as dictated by the state of Vermont.  If you have questions regarding plans, please contact the office.  In addition, please know that school is in session on the Monday and Tuesday before the holiday, and for the weeks directly after Thanksgiving.

As always we are grateful that you share your young people with us, and we are happy to connect with you anytime.

Jon

My class and I did a zoom interview with Brattleboro town clerk, Hillary Francis. Ms. Francis runs the election in town and my class is running an election for our school, so we thought it would be helpful to get some information from her.

Hayla asked Ms. Francis if she got nervous for her first time running an election, and she said yes but what was surprising to me was that she did not only say she got nervous the first time but she gets nervous every time. Another thing that was surprising to me was that she said on election day she has to stay at town hall until midnight and some other people have to stay until two o'clock in the morning to clean up. Ms. Francis also said that if someone is sick there are other people to take their place on election day. This is unique because of Covid precautions. She’s gotten more volunteers offering to help this year than in any year.

The last thing she said that is very important is to be kind and respect others' opinions when running an election. She said, “As long as each person votes once, you’re in good shape.”

Noah, Louie and Logan helped Mr. Sessions plant a hunting camera in a cave Tuesday morning. They are  hoping to get some photos of creatures that may come through the cave at night.  I will ask them to share any photos they might get with us! What animals do you think might show up on the camera?

THAT TIME OF THE YEAR....

Where is Mrs. Dias flying to this week? It looks like she's run into some snow and colder weather this week.  Good thing she has a hat and a warm jacket.  Make sure that when you come to school that you dress warmly. She really should have some mittens on though!!!

Future voters in Mrs. Schultz's first grade class make their choices.

October snow brings a snow person created by Rachel Glickman's 6th grade class.

Counselors Corner

Hello Academy Families!

As the winter season comes up, please know that we are doing everything we can to provide families support as we have in years past. Our programs may look a little bit different this year, as so many things do. Specifically, we are working hard to accommodate students who need warm winter clothing. If you need assistance with this, please fill out our Winter Wear Survey. Be on the lookout for pop-up clothing events in the next few weeks! If you have any questions or concerns please don't hesitate to contact myself or Jody Mattulke.
