REFLECTION on GRADUATION: JUNE 1, 2023 |
Excitement and anticipation was palpable on the beautiful evening of June 1, 2023. The evening began with a special occasion graduation dinner, attended by the graduates and their parents and grandparents, as well as school board members, teachers, volunteers and spouses. Everyone enjoyed the relaxed and warm atmosphere, and we would like to thank Mrs. de Braber and her catering help again for the delicious meal! |

After dinner and photos, the graduates, students, staff, and volunteers, along with parents, grandparents and friends from far and near gathered in the chapel at school for our annual Year-end closing program and the Graduation Ceremony. It is always a special moment to see our Seniors receive their diploma, marking the end of their years at our Christian school. May each of them remain in our thoughts and prayers, as they embark on their journey through this life as young adults, and may the God of whom they've been taught all the years of their Christian education be their guide. Also the sixth graders were excited to graduate from elementary, looking forward to joining the high school learning center in the fall! After a fitting message by Rev. A.H. Verhoef, all the students presented a few beautiful songs and the staff joined for a parting wish to the graduates. The audience enjoyed a PowerPoint presentation as a closing memory of our days at school this past school year. As has become our custom at the closing program, the elementary students also presented all the many volunteers at school a heartfelt token of thanks for the countless hours of dedication to the school. The evening ended with coffee and refreshments in the gym, where many lingered to enjoy the final moments of the school year. |

ANTICIPATIONS: SCHOOL YEAR 2023-2024 We hope everyone is enjoying some weeks away from school, spending time with family and friends, traveling, visiting, vacationing and relaxing. In the meantime, preparations are underway for our new school year. Two dates to keep in mind: Annual Parent Night on August 24 at 7:30 in the chapel at school Studies commence on September 5, the Lord willing.
A few changes have happened since the end of last year. SAYING GOOD BYE |
It is never easy to say farewell to those you care about. Such is also the case when, as a school community we said good bye to Mr. and Mrs. Travis VanDyke and family as they relocated to New Jersey this week. Mr. Van Dyke has been with our school since the beginning of our planning stages, and has since faithfully helped in the high school learning center, as well as led the shop/mechanics class every year. We will miss him very much! Also, Mrs. Van Dyke taught photography and led the yearbook class in years past, and was also our school photographer since the first year. Though we were sad to see them leave, we wish them all the very best as they begin their new chapter in New Jersey. Above all, that God may provide His indispensable guidance for them in the unknown future. |

Hello BABY SAMANTHA! On August 3, Mr. and Mrs. Nico and Nicole Verhoef were blessed with the birth of another healthy daughter, Samantha Jane. She is loved so much by her big sister Charlotte and brother Henk. Mrs. Verhoef plans to step away from teaching for this year, to spend more time with her family. We wish them all a safe and pleasant year together. |

WELCOMING OUR NEW ELEMENTARY AIDE |
We are happy to welcome a new face in our elementary learning center this year! Miss Rebekah Maljaars hopes to work as an aide at school for three days, and we are excited have her join the school community. Rebekah grew up in British Columbia, Canada, and has since lived in Grand Rapids, Michigan while her father studied to be a missionary minister. After her father's theological training was complete, Rebekah moved to Bolivia, South America with her family until approximately a year ago. She has settled in the Grand Rapids area, and is currently studying Early Childhood Development. She is looking forward to getting to know our elementary students and the staff at DLIGR. Welcome, Rebekah! |

A NEW VENTURE: the VILLAGE KITCHEN |
Are you having a busy week? Need a quick meal, or are you scrambling for lunch snacks or a special dessert for company? This year we are beginning a new fundraiser, which will be an ongoing effort throughout the year. A few ladies of the school community will be stocking a school freezer with delicious, homemade freezer meals, desserts and baked items that can be purchased anytime! Most items will be frozen as unbaked so that you can purchase, bake and serve easily. We hope to provide new choices every few weeks, so be sure to check frequently for something that works for your family. Suggestions for favorite dishes or desserts are always welcome! In addition to meals, we also plan to have a few frozen lunch items available to students at a reasonable price. Hectic morning? Or low on groceries? Your student can purchase a lunch item on a cash or IOU basis, and enjoy a special treat at the same time! We are hoping to send out an informational flyer every few weeks to update the school community on what will be coming available for purchase from the freezer and how much we have been able to raise for our school. Pass along the news to friends and family - we can always meet them at school or arrange a delivery of purchased frozen food. Looking forward to exploring this endeavor! How can you help? We would very much appreciate some help in this effort. As we try to bring healthy, hearty meals to your family, we would be grateful to accept donations of supplies to keep our cost low and the fundraising success high of this effort. Some examples of donations could include: Meat of any kind Shredded cheese Foil baking pans (8x8, 9x13, or cardboard pizza rounds) Vacuum seal rolls or bags Monetary donation to cover grocery costs
Drop-off of donations or supplies can be arranged with Mrs. Annemarie Fluit (616-840-0638) or brought to school during school hours. Thank you in advance! |
