Immortal Trees Bookshop weekly newsletter: Issue 9

Wednesday, June 28, 2023 THURSDAY JUNE 29

Yes it's Wednesday and here is the newsletter! We thought we would start sending the newsletter out a few days BEFORE our Saturday events so you can have more time to plan your weekend. And it also lets us remind you about Thursday evening events. And maybe it brings a little sunshine to the middle of your week. :)

Happy Wednesday, Thursday, AND Friday!

Update: So, yes, it's Thursday. I didn't get the newsletter out yesterday, but will try to get it out Wednesday next week. <laughing> Have a great weekend!

Upcoming events:

So many great things have just populated the calendar! See details below for the May events, but here's the quick list:

JULY:

  • Sat, July 8: Guest Author: Haley Rose, author of Smelly Cat

  • Sat, July 22: Christmas in July Party! All day event.

AUGUST: We are working on the calendar for this month. What events do you want to attend? Send us an email with your suggestions!

Reaching out to our community

Daily, we have wonderful people who tell us they didn't know we were here. It has got us thinking. How many people don't know we exist? How many readers are there out there who don't know they have a bookstore right here? We have talked about placing ads in newspaper and online (maybe through Google or Yelp), but our budget is a little tight. Those news and search engine companies reach LOTS of people; it would be great to be able to use those fantastic resources. We are asking our community to help us raise a little money so we can reach more people through printed and digital advertising. Let's widen our reading circle! :)

In addition to advertising, the funds will allow us to strengthen inventory, offer even more events (we are thinking birthday parties and bridal/baby showers!), and hopefully hire an employee or two to give us a little more flexibility to do some community outreach.

The QR code and link below go to our Go Fund Me page. We would be so touched if you could help us out by a donation or a share to people you know.

We want to get our name out there. We are confident there are plenty of people who want to join our circle and shop in our store; they just don't know we exist. :)

Thank you again for all of your love. We hope to see you soon.

P.S. Many thank yous to everyone who has told someone else about us. Believing in us enough to share with someone else is by far the most wonderful compliment you could ever give us.

When you are wrong, make it write ; )

So last week, I wrote that we were interested in advertising in the Avondale printed magazine. I have a few corrections about it I want to share with you:

  1. The printed magazine is not called EDGE; it's called RAVE Review, and it is a color, glossy community guide sharing all of the fun things the city of Avondale has to offer. RAVE stands for "Resources, Activities, Venues, and Events" (I love a good acronym),  and it is published quarterly. Flipping through it, I see several pages of free library events for all ages, including a summer reading program and fun kits to check out at the library (so many summer time activities!). There are free movies (fun for the whole family), an adult watercolor activity, and even a family rave with bubbles, balloons and confetti! The guide then lists weekly classes offered, including dance, music, golf, painting, and futsal (do YOU know what futsal is? I had to look it up!) The guide then includes all of the great resources offered - like, did you know there is a neighborhood bus system called Zoom? It's free!

  2. I incorrectly made the assumption that the guide had paid advertisements (like some of the other glossy color guides we looked into) but everything in the guide is a resource for you to learn about what the city has to offer. :) And the best part is, this guide is free. We even had someone from the city come in with her sunny smile and a poster for the Fourth of July celebration, and she was super excited when we asked if could have copies here for people to take.

I want to apologize to the city of Avondale for having incorrect information in the last newsletter. We have been so thankful of all of the help, connecting, resources, smiles, promoting, and question answering we have received from the city. If you know our story, we originally wanted to be in Buckeye so we would be near our former scholars and their families to provide fun programming and after-school enrichment, but because of covid, none of the new retail buildings were being built, so we had to look to other cities. We can't thank the city enough for all of their love. EVERYONE we have talked to from there has been positive, friendly, and helpful. I think they must get brownies or chocolate every day because they are the nicest people. That's why it was important to me to correct my mistake.

If you wanna check out some of the cool things going on (and you don't have one of these cool guide books), don't worry! I put the link to the digital version below. Get out, check out the library and their cool programming, and then come by and tell us what you did! We love hearing about you getting out there and growing.

Saturday, July 22: Christmas in July!

Shop for Christmas gifts now so you can have a stress-free holiday season. For me, Christmas and four family birthdays are within six weeks of each other, so for several years now, I have just purchased gifts during the summer when school is out and there aren't any major holidays to decorate or plan for. Maybe you want to do that too? We will have vendors, authors, cookies, and maybe even a free sweet treat surprise. And, of course, lots of Christmas decorations and music.

Fa-la-lots of fun!

Storytime:

Every Saturday from

noon-1pm

FREE EVENT!

Ms. Margaret is our lovely volunteer who plans our weekly story and activity.

Would you be interested in writing something for our newsletter? We are looking for volunteers to offer a book review, an op ed, or anything else interesting to share. Email Charity at the end of this newsletter (the Contact Us button).

Did you know we have a book trade program? We always accept donated books, but we also can give you trade credit for good-quality books (50 cents credit for paperbacks and $1 credit for hardbacks). The credit can be applied to 50% of the price of any green or pink-stickered books. Come in for details about our policy. We are always looking for manga, westerns, STEM, classic lit, young adult, and young/early reader books.

Editor's last words: Firework season! Woot!

This year, the 4th of July is on a Tuesday, so you know what that means, right? City celebrations ALL WEEKEND LONG! Yes!

In fact, our very own Avondale has quite the party planned. They are going to have a DJ, kids section, food trucks, live music, and a 25-minute fireworks show! Saturday, 6-9pm, with fireworks at 8:25pm. Phoenix Raceway. General admission is free.

In our hometown of Buckeye, the Independence Day party will be on Tuesday. Also offering food trucks, vendors, and entertainment, you can choose to go into the event to enjoy the festivities or park along Palo Verde Rd and sit out in your camp chair facing the airpark. Tuesday, 6:30-9:30pm, fireworks at 9pm. Buckeye Airport. I believe general admission is free.

Michael and I have been to the Buckeye fireworks a few years now (not the party, just sitting in our camp chairs along the road), and the temperature is a bit cooler out in the desert and the fireworks view doesn't have any trees in the way. I'm excited that Avondale's party is on Saturday, so maybe I can get in TWO firework displays! That would rock!

All of us here at Immortal Trees Bookshop want to wish you and your family and friends a safe, relaxing, and happy-memory-making 4th of July. We can put aside our political differences and just celebrate together as American. Happy Birthday, United States of America!
