“Honey, your ankles are the size of your thighs. I don’t care if this is a side-effect of your medication; it’s not healthy!" More now than ever, we need to listen to the warning signs of our bodies. Swollen extremities, water-retention, frequent infections, constant eye bags, gout, and overall inflammation in the body, are all signs that the Lymphatic System isn’t working properly. Regular use of Red Light Therapy (RLT) is proven to enhance lymphatic drainage, reducing swelling and inflammation throughout the body.
Part of the immune system, the lymphatic system acts as the body’s drainage network, breaking down and circulating fats and toxins out of the body. The lymphatic system produces immune cells, such as lymphocytes, monocytes and antibody producing, plasma cells. The fluid that contains white blood cells to defend against germs, is called lymph. Lymph is created in the bone marrow and thymus organ, then transported throughout the body by way of lymph vessels. Lymph nodes are glands found throughout the lymph vessels and spleen, where the white blood cells fight. Swollen lymph nodes occur when the body is fighting an infection, like strep throat or mononucleosis. If the lymphatic system isn’t working properly, the body is more prone to disease and sickness.
The lymphatic system is a complex network of lymph vessels, tissues, and organs through which the body’s lymph, drains from the tissues into the blood. The lymphatic system clears away infection and keeps the body fluids in balance. Diseases, infections, and blockages can cause issues with lymphatic function. A common issue that arises from lymphatic disfunction is Lymphedema. Symptoms of lymphedema include swelling in the arms and legs as fluid builds up in the extremities, often causing an achy, heavy feeling, difficulty moving, frequent skin infections, tight, hard skin, wart-like growths and even fluid to leak through the skin.
RLT enhances lymph drainage, as it restores normal lymphatic activity and promotes the cleansing of lymphatic fluids, reducing swelling in the body. By accelerating the regeneration of cells, RLT creates an entirely new set of younger, stronger cells to carry on the lymphatic functions. Plus, RLT stimulates the production of ATP, which fuels the body, allowing for more efficiently functioning organs and tissues to detoxify the cells.
RLT rebalances the immune system from an over-reactive inflammatory response, to a normal, healthy response, by supporting the circulatory and lymphatic system in cleansing the body of free radicals. RLT stimulates the mitochondria in fat cells, causing them to expel lipids and toxins through the lymphatic system, promoting a slimming effect. RLT rejuvenates the skin, triggering the production of collagen and elastin, further protecting the body from germs and bacteria. Also, RLT promotes microcirculation flow and improves collateral lymph circumference allowing for fluid to pass easier throughout the lymphatic system.
Aside from RLT, exercise, hot and cold showers, massage, deep breathing and dry brushing are all other ways to remove toxins and create lymphatic flow. It’s also advised to avoid tight clothing and sip lots of, room-temperature or warmer, water. Lymph fluid is about 95% water and gets thicker when the body is dehydrated. Eat foods that increase lymphatic flow like cranberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, pomegranates, leafy greens, nuts, seeds, garlic, turmeric, and seaweed. Avoid foods that hinder lymphatic function like red meat, caffeine, alcohol, excessive salt, processed foods, artificial sugar, soy, dairy and trans-fat.
