June Newsletter

Still here!

There seems to be a real focus on creativity at the moment; Grayson Perry's Art Club, Sewing Bee, life drawing, streaming live music and theatre, they even dusted off Kirstie plus Bob Ross and his hairdo.

All that we can say is ... welcome!

Are you and yours well? Weathering this crisis?

This time we have the spotlight on inspiration, and we follow up on some of the photos from May.

Please keep in contact through our facebook page or instagram, leave a comment or a picture, it helps to make us all feel less alone.

If you are lacking a little entertainment ....

we are having a tidy up and dusting out the website at the moment. Keep an eye out for new pictures, especially the artist ones, better links and some tweaks on the layout.

What Am I ? And Who Is Making Me ?

And then....and Now

Remember these WIPs? We have added some new images to share their progress  (regression in my case!) Have you managed to match them up with their makers?

 Spotlight :

Inspirations 2:

Last time it was photos - but that may not be enough. At that point it is out with the arty kit - which can be as immediate as a biro and the back of an envelope, pencils or paints, or a computer. Often it is the act rather the outcome that is important.

Drawing is a discipline that is easy to gloss over; but it is a fundamental skill to underpin creating textiles.

Fran Brammer likes the discipline of drawing, it makes you think, to be analytical, and also allows you to be expressive.Trying things in different ways lets you make choices and rehearse marks and lines.

Angela Anning has been using lockdown time to improve her drawing skills. Dionne Swift's online drawing workshops have provided a structure for some serious concentration on training the eye to observe more keenly during the last 11 weeks. Through them  we have been coaxed out of our comfort zones to try different approaches to drawing. It doesn't matter if you don't draw brilliantly as long as you can feel confident enough to have a go.

Julie McCready uses her computer, processing images and drawing from scratch. Once you get used to handling the software it can be so versatile and surprisingly responsive. This is quite a  common practice now, but do you remember when David Hockney shocked the art world by exhibiting his digital 'paintings'? That was a scary long time ago!

A lot of us have access to software that will let us play with our photos. Linda's photo of rusting bedsprings takes on a whole new energy with this mirroring and flipping.

I think creativity starts inside, with a willingness to look and then to play and explore. It is still creativity no matter how you choose to do it.

ITS COMPETITION TIME!

To Celebrate my 10 years of making Felt Pictures I have challenged myself

to make 12 pictures this year.

So I have decided to have a COMPETITION!

DO YOU THINK YOU HAVE AN IMAGE THAT WOULD MAKE IT INTO THIS CHALLENGE?

The photo has to be taken by you, so you can

give me the Copyright to make it into a Felt Picture.

The theme is

‘SANCTUARY’,
It seems only right to acknowledge our lockdown experience.

Sanctuary is a place of safety, so entries are totally open to your own interpretation of a place that you feel safe, or has proved a safe place to be.

The WINNER will receive a ‘Limited Edition Giclee Print’

of their image made into a Felt Picture.

To enter the Competition send me your image to bridget@orchardlodgeyork.co.uk
With your name and permission for me to use your image and the theme ‘Sanctuary’ in the subject title.

The Winning image for this COMPETITION will be announced on my Facebook page where I will show the artwork in progress, so you can see how it evolves.

Entry cut off date is 12th June 2020, the winner will be announced in 20th June 2020.
